Job Summary

Responsible for the evaluation and placement of insurance risks for the purpose of determining the best product/premium solution through the review of insurance files, client medical records, financial history, and information provided by agents and/or brokers. Typically manages larger, more complex cases, including older age impaired risk, as well as high death benefit requiring complex layering of reinsurance and internal retention. Cases managed will be for all ages and face amounts. Maintains primary ownership of cases, most of which are informally underwritten, during the underwriting process, requiring engaging in frequent communication between agents/advisors, carriers, and internal resources. Responsible for setting agent/advisor expectations appropriately and providing an exceptional service experience throughout the process. Researches additional, complex insurance options as needed. Acts as a partner with sales and producers to formulate the best solution for the proposed insured. Negotiates to secure the most competitive offer for placement of policy with the appropriate carrier.

Job Description

Following is a summary of the essential functions for this job.  Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below.  Specific activities may change from time to time. 

  • Assesses risk and negotiate cases with producers and carriers through evaluation of an individual's medical history or physical condition, occupational hazards, financial background, insurable interest and other information pertinent to the decision
  • Works with Agents, Sales and Sales Support to determine appropriate carrier based on proposed insured’s risk prior to and/or during the insurance application process
  • Conducts regular proactive case follow-ups via phone primarily and email secondarily, with insurance agents, vendors, internal resources, and carriers
  • Organizes and prioritizes workload to ensure case is processed, issued, and placed in a timely manner while maintaining frequent communication to manage customer expectations appropriately
  • Prepares or reviews underwriting summaries to include medical and non-medical information (i.e., abnormal lab results, EKG interpretation, family history, blood pressure, weight, aviation, avocation, travel, etc.) for carrier review
  • Develop and manage relationships with producers, carrier underwriters and team members and acts as a resource for underwriting questions or issues; networks with internal and external peers
  • Maintain current knowledge of carrier underwriting guidelines, insurance products, brokerage market, and re-insurance market
  • Represents company at industry conferences and events, i.e., AHOU, and presents to internal and external customers.
  • Provides on-going underwriting training to junior staff underwriters and concierge
  • Carries a caseload of 125-175 larger and more complex cases and completes 25-35 follow ups per week within a 48-hour turnaround time.
  • Management of higher profile cases, including but not limited to larger premium term and permanent cases, V.I.P. cases as defined within assigned account or team, conversions, complex ownership structures involving trusts, businesses, etc.

  • Ability to work in a self-directed fashion
  • Experience with PCs in a Windows environment
  • Demonstrated proficiency in base computer applications such as Microsoft Office software products.
  • Ability to analyze problems and develop solutions
  • Ability to communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization
  • Strong knowledge of carrier strengths
  • Ability to identify underwriting strengths particularly on large, more complex or elderly cases
  • Ability to mentor and educate underwriters with less experience
  • Ability to present sales ideas to agents depending on the rating
  • Ability to work with diversified group of home office underwriters, sales, and agents to provide the best customer service.
  • Previous experience as an insurance Underwriter and strong insurance product knowledge
  • Strong analytical, negotiating, influencing skills and decision-making skills
  • Ability to explain underwriting results clearly to agents, sales, and new business
  • Ability to understand and analyze medical and financial documents (more complex multi-impaired and in-depth financial design knowledge)
  • Strong critical thinking

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Underwriting certifications
  • Prior brokerage experience as an underwrite
