Azra Games is recapturing the childhood thrill of storytelling with your entire toy box for modern AAA gaming. We are dedicated to one genre, role-playing games, and led by veteran designer Mark Otero (Zero-to-one director of Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, EA’s most successful mobile game of all time, with $1.5B lifetime revenue). Azra has assembled an expert team with decades of experience building blockbuster games. Our debut release, Code named ‘Project:Legends’, will be Mark’s ninth RPG. And his best. Azra Games believes in harnessing the power of technology, with a focus on generative AI, to radically disrupt & transform game development.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for crafting visually engaging user interface assets for our upcoming free-to-play title. You will work closely with the UI and UX directors, Game Designers, and developers to ensure that the UI enhances the player's experience while maintaining aesthetic consistency with the game's visual direction.

This is a 3-month contract to start with possibility of extension depending on workload and performance.

Responsibilities

  • Design and create high-quality 2D assets for game UI, including menus, HUDs, buttons, icons, and in-game overlays.
  • Collaborate with UX designers to translate wireframes and user flow diagrams into visually compelling UI components.
  • Ensure a seamless and engaging user experience by implementing feedback from playtesting and stakeholder reviews.
  • Develop style guides, UI mockups, and prototypes to maintain a consistent visual language across all UI elements.
  • Work closely with game designers and developers to implement UI elements within the game engine.
  • Optimize UI assets for different screen resolutions and aspect ratios.
  • Create animations, transitions, and effects to enhance UI interactions and improve usability.
  • Iterate on designs based on feedback from internal teams and players.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Digital Art, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a UI Artist in the gaming industry.
  • A portfolio demonstrating exceptional UI design and artistry in gaming projects.
  • Proficiency in industry standard UI design tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Figma.
  • Experience working within game engines like Unity, Unreal Engine, or other proprietary engines.
  • Strong understanding of typography, color theory, composition, and visual hierarchy.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to evolving project requirements.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.

Preferred

  • Experience working with AAA and mobile game development.
  • Understanding of UX principles and player psychology.
  • Experience with accessibility design to make UI inclusive for diverse players.
  • Experience with 2D animation tools such as After Effects, Adobe Flash/Animate, or in-engine animation systems.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
