At CesiumAstro, we are developers and pioneers of out-of-the-box communication systems for satellites, UAVs, launch vehicles, and other space and airborne platforms. We take pride in our dynamic and cross-functional work environment, which allows us to learn, develop, and engage across our organization. If you are looking for hands-on, interactive, and autonomous work, CesiumAstro is the place for you. We are actively seeking passionate, collaborative, energetic, and forward-thinking individuals to join our team.

We are seeking a highly motivated Turbomachinery Engineer II to support the design, development, and testing of next-generation rocket propulsion systems. In this role, you will be responsible for creating and optimizing critical turbopump hardware from initial concept through flight-ready implementation. Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering and manufacturing teams, you will contribute to the rapid development of high-performance propulsion technologies in a fast-paced environment where hands-on problem solving, technical rigor, and continuous innovation are essential to mission success.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and develop a variety of turbopump parts, including cryogenics pumps, turbines and seals.  Create models and drawings of parts and assemblies.  Perform calculations and analyses with team support.
  • Own requirements definition, architecture trades, and system-level integration for assigned subsystems.
  • Create schematics and document processes.
  • Perform CFD and FEA analyses to evaluate performance parameters such as efficiency, head curves and mechanical integrity under operating conditions.
  • Work with manufacturing team to create finished turbomachinery parts.  Support parts through 3d-printing, machining, post processing, and inspection. Incorporate feedback to improve design for manufacturing.
  • Develop and execute test programs, analyze experimental data, and apply findings to optimize designs.
  • Collaborate across mechanical, aerospace, and controls engineering teams to deliver flight-ready hardware.

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in aerospace propulsion systems or related areas.
  • Hands-on proficiency in CAD tools (Siemens NX, SolidWorks)
  • Demonstrated expertise in structural or mechanical design for flight hardware.
  • Experience in early-stage vehicle architecture and design trades.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.
  • Willing to make mistakes, take responsibilities, work independently and be transparent about your work
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Prior experience designing turbopump parts, including cryogenic pumps, turbines and seals, or other rocket systems.
  • Practical experience in test bench setup and performance diagnostics.
  • Hands-on engineering (Full-stack: computer to wrench to broom).
  • Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Familiarity with aerospace safety and reliability practices.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
