Join Bitnomial: Build the Future of Derivatives in Haskell

Bitnomial is not your typical fintech startup. We are the first and only company approved by a full CFTC vote to operate a derivatives exchange (DCM), clearinghouse (DCO), and brokerage (FCM) under one roof. We are also the first and only company to launch US-regulated perpetual futures—a monumental achievement in modern derivatives infrastructure.

We’re not here to move fast and break things. We move fast and build the most reliable, high-performance systems in the industry. Our stack is entirely in-house, built from the ground up in Haskell—a powerful, expressive language perfectly suited for building high-assurance, mission-critical systems. This is not a CRUD job. This is trading infrastructure at its most complex and exciting.

At Bitnomial, you’ll join a world-class team of engineers with backgrounds in high-frequency trading, math, physics, financial engineering, distributed systems, and low-latency networking. Many of us cut our teeth at elite HFT firms, so we bring deep trading intuition and intense rigor to everything we build. Our founding team is all engineers, and our culture is flat, collaborative, and focused on solving the hardest problems in derivatives trading.

What You’ll Work On
  • Design and optimize ultra-low-latency matching engines and clearing systems

  • Build real-time risk and margining systems with microsecond precision

  • Engineer order routing, market data pipelines, and execution infrastructure

  • Scale fault-tolerant, high-throughput distributed systems across regions

  • Partner with compliance to translate regulatory constraints into elegant code

  • Make the impossible look routine every day

Why It’s Unique
  • All tech built in-house, no legacy vendors, no red tape

  • Pure Haskell stack, used the way it was meant to be—powerful type systems, concurrency models, and functional purity enabling correctness and speed

  • First-of-its-kind regulatory approval lets us build what no one else can

  • A chance to shape the future of regulated crypto and commodity derivatives

  • A high-trust, high-responsibility culture that rewards curiosity and grit

  • A team that’s as comfortable debating category theory as they are exchange latency

Who We’re Looking For

You’re a systems builder. You thrive under pressure. You’ve worked in the belly of the beast—trading firms, exchanges, or market makers—and know what it takes to build systems that must not fail.

Required Experience:

  • 5+ years in trading technology at hedge funds, prop shops, exchanges, or HFT firms

  • Deep knowledge of order management, market microstructure, and execution systems

  • Built or contributed to matching engines, clearing systems, or real-time risk platforms

  • Expertise in low-latency, high-throughput system design and optimization

  • Hands-on experience with market data protocols (FIX, binary feeds, etc.)

  • Strong programming skills in C++, Rust, or similar performance-first languages

  • Strong systems engineering, Linux internals, and tuning under load

  • Excellent debugging and diagnostic skills in production environments

  • Comfortable working in-person with a tight-knit engineering team in Chicago

Bonus Points:

  • Experience at elite HFT firms or regulated exchanges

  • Familiarity with digital asset markets and crypto derivatives

  • Exposure to FPGA, kernel bypass networking, or hardware acceleration

  • Experience with blockchain protocols and cryptographic systems

  • Background in quant finance, physics, distributed systems, or security

  • Prior experience with Haskell or other functional languages

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics

Compensation & Benefits
  • Base salary range: $150k – $210k

  • Equity options in a high-impact, high-growth company

  • Health and dental insurance with employer coverage

  • Employer-matched 401(k)

  • Parental leave

  • Equipment stipend for your development setup

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
