Thales Australia is seeking an experienced Trade Compliance professional with strong background in export control regimes, namely Australian and U.S. export laws, and experience in overall compliance with facilitating import and export activities, to support the Protected Vehicles business. This role is primarily focused on export controls and global trade compliance, ensuring adherence to Australian, U.S. (ITAR/EAR), European and other applicable regulatory regimes.
The TCO is a key advisor to the Protected Vehicle (PRV) business and an integral member of the Thales Australia Trade Compliance network. The role supports current and prospective projects by ensuring all export control, re-export, transfer, and licensing obligations are properly implemented and maintained. The particular focus of this role is on implementation of policies and procedures and ensuring compliance with national and other international export control regimes.

KEY ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Trade Compliance Officer, you are accountable for:
- Ensuring that all projects and business support functions strictly comply with the requirements of the Australian, U.S. (ITAR, EAR), European and all other applicable export control rules and regulations
- ensuring compliance with import and export controls through:
- identifying licensing requirements
- deciding if a licence is needed
- managing the licence application process
- implementing the licence requirements
- maintaining appropriate records
- Keeping the businesses informed regarding export control and global trade developments
- Creating and maintaining procedures and instructions to comply with all applicable laws and regulations in the area of trade compliance
- Ensuring that Project teams fully understand their access, re-export and transfer obligations under ITAR and US FMS with respect to a project and the applicable US Authorisations, e.g. TAA, MLA, Third Party Retransfer approvals under Foreign Military Sales
- Assisting with internal compliance reviews and audits; and conducting spot checks on processes and trade compliance data integrity
- Preparing periodic reports based on agreed set of KPIs
- Developing and conducting training to relevant staff on export control and global trade matters
- Reporting non-compliance, corrective actions and impact to the Director Trade Compliance
- Providing trade compliance oversight, solutions and recommendations in facilitating import and export activities, such as guidance on tariffs, Tariff Concession Orders, Free Trade Agreements, and maintaining compliance with the Australian Trusted Trader program and other Customs obligations
- Representing the businesses on trade compliance matters with internal and external stakeholders
KEY KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
To be successful in your role, you will have demonstrated and/or acquired the following knowledge and experience:
- 3-4 years of experience in international trade compliance, export controls. Previous experience in the Defence industry in a trade/export control compliance role will be highly regarded.
- Experience with Australian and U.S. export controls laws, and experience in overall compliance with facilitating import and export activities.
- Tertiary qualifications in international commerce, economics, policy or international relations will be highly regarded.
- Certification in export controls and/or international trade law will be highly regarded
To fulfil the role the candidate should be able to:
- Rapidly, interpret and implement trade compliance requirements across the PRV Portfolio
- Prioritise tasks effectively
- Ensure that projects have attained the required permits/license in support of tangible/intangible export and manage any changes to the authorisations accordingly
- ensure that trade compliance controls are implemented and operating effectively, propose and implement mitigation strategies for any non-compliance
- Add value to the Thales Australia Trade Compliance network

Prior to being offered employment, you will need to complete pre-employment police and (role dependent) medical checks. Applicants must be Australian citizens and be eligible to obtain Baseline security clearance.

The U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or Export Administration Regulations (EAR) are applicable and as such, your nationality may be a factor in determining your suitability for this role.
