Hermeus is an aerospace and defense technology company founded to radically accelerate air travel by delivering hypersonic aircraft. The company aims to develop hypersonic aircraft quickly and cost-effectively by integrating hardware-rich, iterative development with modern computing and autonomy. This approach has been validated through design, build, and test of the company’s first combined turbojet-ramjet engine and is now being scaled through its first flight vehicle program, Quarterhorse. Hermeus is also developing Darkhorse — an uncrewed hypersonic aircraft designed to deliver unique asymmetric capabilities to the warfighter.

A tooling engineer on the structural engineering team is responsible for the design, analysis, fabrication, and use of various drill tools, jigs, integration fixtures, and ground support equipment in support of major structural assemblies.

Responsibilities:

  • Design complex tooling and fixtures using CAD software to support manufacturing processes, including machining, assembly, and inspection.
  • Ensure tooling designs meet ergonomic, safety, and operational requirements.
  • Work with internal and external machine shops to oversee the fabrication of tools and fixtures, ensuring compliance with design specifications and timelines.
  • Evaluate and recommend fabrication methods and materials to optimize tool performance and cost-effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and production teams to integrate tooling into production processes seamlessly.
  • Conduct tooling trials and validations to ensure readiness for production use.
  • Identify opportunities for improving existing tooling and processes to increase efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance product quality.
  • Provide innovative solutions to complex manufacturing challenges.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive tooling documentation, including CAD models, drawings, and operational guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with aerospace quality standards and company procedures.
  • Work closely with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure alignment on tooling requirements and performance.
  • Act as a liaison between engineering and production teams to resolve tooling-related issues.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in tooling design and manufacturing engineering within the aerospace, automotive, or related industries.
  • Hands-on experience with manufacturing processes such as machining, additive manufacturing, and fabrication.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., CATIA, SolidWorks, or NX) for tooling design.
  • Knowledge of GD&T and ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing and assembly processes for high-performance aerospace systems.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex tooling issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and experience implementing continuous improvement initiatives.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
