About the Role

As a Technical Sales Representative at Wheatland Tube, a division of Zekelman Industries, you will play a key role in driving market demand, influencing product specifications, and strengthening relationships with contractors, engineers, designers, and fire protection professionals. This position requires strong technical sales expertise, relationship-building skills, and the ability to communicate complex product information to diverse audiences. You will directly contribute to expanding Wheatland's market presence while supporting customer success and business growth.

You will collaborate closely with Outside Sales, Quality, Operations, Marketing, and Product Management teams to ensure customer needs are met throughout the project lifecycle. This role requires frequent travel and is ideal for someone who enjoys building relationships, solving technical challenges, and influencing projects from design through installation.

What You'll Do

  • Performs technical sales and market development activities with contractors, engineering firms, designers, specifiers, and end users to increase product awareness and demand.

  • Conducts in-person customer visits, jobsite consultations, technical presentations, lunch-and-learn sessions, and design-stage meetings.

  • Gathers market intelligence, monitors competitive activity, and communicates project developments to support business strategy.

  • Educates contractors, engineers, and fire protection professionals on product availability, technical capabilities, applicable codes, standards, and installation best practices.

  • Identifies upcoming projects and influences specifications to secure Wheatland product approval and specification.

  • Tracks projects throughout the design, bidding, and installation lifecycle to maintain specification continuity and customer engagement.

  • Supports contractors during bidding and submittal phases by providing technical documentation and product expertise.

  • Represents Wheatland Tube at trade shows, industry conferences, association events, and technical seminars.

  • Evaluates quality claims by conducting onsite investigations, gathering data, and coordinating with the Quality Assurance team to resolve customer concerns.

  • Collaborates with Outside Sales Representatives to achieve territory objectives, share project intelligence, and deliver exceptional customer support.

  • Partners with Quality, Operations, Marketing, and Product Management teams to align customer requirements with business capabilities.

  • Conducts outreach activities with colleges and universities through presentations, career fairs, and student engagement initiatives.

  • Supports special technical sales and market development projects as assigned.

  • Leads and promotes healthy and safe work practices as required by regulatory agencies and Company policy.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related field preferred; equivalent technical experience will be considered.

  • 3–5 years of experience in technical sales, mechanical or piping systems, fire protection, steel products, or a related industry.

  • Experience supporting contractors, engineers, designers, or specifiers preferred.

  • Understanding of steel pipe manufacturing, installation practices, and applicable industry standards including NFPA, ASTM, and UL/FM.

  • Strong technical communication skills with the ability to present information to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and technical documents.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, CRM systems, and mobile technology.

  • Self-motivated with excellent organizational and time management skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, customer-focused environment.

  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately 25–50%, including occasional overnight travel.
