The Role:

This role sits directly with one of Petra's clients, an established alternative investment manager with a long-standing real estate investment platform. The firm takes a fundamental, value-oriented approach to investing and operates across real estate debt and equity strategies, including complex joint ventures, closed-end and open-end funds, and opportunistic investments.

The Tax Analyst will support the tax team with day-to-day tax administration, reporting coordination, and ongoing organizational projects across investment funds and related entities. This is an opportunity for an early-career professional with a general accounting background and an interest in developing their tax knowledge within the alternative investment industry.

The role will involve recurring tax-related responsibilities as well as longer-term projects focused on improving processes, maintaining accurate records, and supporting the broader tax function. The position offers exposure to investment tax operations and opportunities to take on more technical responsibilities over time.

  • Support the development and maintenance of tax basis databases and related tracking schedules.
  • Help maintain tax documentation and records across partnerships, corporations, and other investment entities.
  • Assist with data gathering, validation, and organization for tax reporting and compliance projects.
  • Support ongoing file cleanup, data organization, and process improvement initiatives.

Team Coordination & Operational Support

  • Work closely with tax team members to support day-to-day operational needs and longer-term projects.
  • Provide regular status updates on assigned responsibilities, outstanding items, and project progress.
  • Assist with tracking recurring deliverables and maintaining organized tax records.
  • Communicate proactively with team members to resolve questions and ensure timely completion of assignments.
  • Take on additional tax preparation and reporting responsibilities as technical knowledge and experience develop.

Qualifications:

  • 1–2 years of accounting, tax, or related experience preferred; entry-level candidates will also be considered.
  • General understanding of basic accounting principles and financial information.
  • Familiarity with tax entity structures, including partnerships and corporations, preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of K-1s, tax forms, and tax documentation is helpful but not required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and comfort working with spreadsheets, databases, and financial records.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage recurring responsibilities and longer-term projects.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Proactive communication skills, including providing regular status updates and raising questions when needed.
  • Dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable handling administrative and documentation-focused responsibilities.
  • Willingness to learn new tax concepts and develop technical knowledge over time.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
