Instrument is a design and technology company. We build brands, products, and experiences that move businesses forward—by making the complex simple.

For over 20 years, we’ve partnered with companies like Google, ServiceNow, Uber, Eventbrite, and ŌURA, helping them navigate change, launch new ideas, and grow with intention.

Our work spans Brand, Marketing, and Product, but what defines us is how we work. We bring strategy, design, and engineering together from the start, moving quickly from idea to execution and refining as we go. We aim to do great work and be great to work with, because both matter.

We’re a collaborative, hands-on team with roots in Portland and New York and a distributed presence across the U.S. and Europe. We build teams around the needs of the work, staying nimble without sacrificing craft.

We value curiosity, perspective, and continuous learning, and we’re committed to building an inclusive environment where people can do their best work.

If that sounds like you, we’d love to meet you.

The Role

The best strategy isn't built in isolation. It's built by connecting people, disciplines, and ideas together around a shared vision.

That's what this role is all about.

As Strategy Director, you'll be a trusted strategic partner to one of the world's leading technology companies, shaping work across digital products, websites, content, marketing, and brand. You'll help clients navigate complex business challenges, lead and mentor a team of exceptional strategists, and identify new opportunities to grow one of Instrument's most important partnerships.

If you're energized by executive client relationships, passionate about developing people, and motivated by solving complex business problems—not just delivering projects—you'll have the opportunity to make a lasting impact here.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as the senior strategic partner for a global technology client, building trusted relationships with executive stakeholders.
  • Lead strategy across a portfolio of digital products, websites, content ecosystems, and marketing initiatives.
  • Partner closely with Design, Technology, Production, and Client Leadership to shape integrated solutions from discovery through delivery.
  • Translate customer, business, market, and product insights into actionable strategies that influence decision-making.
  • Facilitate workshops, executive presentations, and strategic conversations that create alignment and move work forward.
  • Mentor and develop strategists, fostering high-quality thinking and collaborative problem solving.
  • Help establish strategic approaches, frameworks, and ways of working that elevate the quality and consistency of our work.
  • Identify opportunities to deepen client partnerships and support business growth.
  • Contribute to new business efforts and thought leadership within the strategy practice.

What You'll Bring

  • Significant experience leading digital strategy within an agency, consultancy, product organization, or innovation team.
  • Experience partnering directly with senior and executive-level clients to solve complex business and customer challenges.
  • A strong foundation across digital products, websites, content strategy, customer experience, and brand.
  • A track record of leading multidisciplinary teams and influencing outcomes across design, technology, content, and production.
  • Experience mentoring and developing strategists while creating an environment where great thinking thrives.
  • Exceptional facilitation, storytelling, and executive communication skills.
  • Comfort navigating ambiguity and bringing clarity to complex problems.
  • Curiosity about emerging technologies—including AI—and good judgment about when and how to apply them.
  • A collaborative, humble leadership style that earns trust through partnership rather than authority.

Pay Range

  • The expected pay range for this position is $150,000-$185,000. This range reflects the potential compensation across multiple levels and U.S. geographic pay regions. Final compensation is determined by the candidate's level and their work location. Instrument uses three regional pay ranges to account for cost of living (US1 +15%, US2 +7.5%, US3 Base). What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
