Job Description

We are seeking a hands-on Lead Technical Consultant (Storage/Backup/Cloud Architect) to own the design, implementation, and lifecycle management of enterprise storage, backup, and recovery platforms with a focus on NetApp ONTAP (including SnapCenter and advanced replication), Commvault (including Metallic 365, Air Gap Protect, and Clean Room Recovery), VMware (on-prem), and Microsoft Azure. You will serve as the technical authority for architecture decisions, lead cross-functional delivery, mentor engineers and partners, and ensure our data protection posture meets business RTO/RPO objectives and compliance requirements.

Key Responsibilities

NetApp Storage (ONTAP & Data Protection)

  • Architect and administer NetApp Storage Systems across NFS/SMB/iSCSI/FC, including capacity planning, performance tuning, and multiprotocol security.
  • Design and operate NetApp SnapCenter for application-consistent protection (e.g., SQL, Oracle, VMware), including policy creation, scheduling, retention, and plug-in lifecycle management.
  • Implement and support synchronous and asynchronous replication strategies (SnapMirror/SnapVault), including SnapMirror Active Sync (SM-BC) for zero-RPO workloads and metro-level HA; define intercluster peering, throttle/QoS, and failover runbooks.
  • Lead remediation and upgrades (ONTAP releases, firmware), risk assessments, and DR exercises; maintain detailed diagrams and SOPs.

Commvault Backup & Recovery

  • Own the design, deployment, and day-to-day administration of the Commvault platform, including storage policies, dedupe, indexing, encryption, immutability, air-gapped copies, and multi-tier retention.
  • Configure Metallic 365 for Microsoft 365 (Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams), including role-based access, legal hold, and granular restore workflows.
  • Engineer robust backup solutions for on-prem VMware (VADP-based) and file servers, including proxy sizing, CBT optimization, application-aware backups, and instant recovery.
  • Implement Commvault Air Gap Protect for tamper-resistant, isolated copy workflows and Commvault Clean Room Recovery to support malware-free recovery validation, orchestration, and controlled reintegration.
  • Establish monitoring/alerting, success SLAs, compliance reporting, and continuous improvement cadences.

VMware & Azure Integration

  • Design and operate VMware vSphere infrastructure leveraged by NetApp (FC/iSCSI datastores), including HA/DRS, lifecycle management, and performance troubleshooting.
  • Integrate backup and replication with Azure (IaaS), leveraging storage immutability, cross-region strategies, and cost-optimized tiers; guide adoption of cloud-adjacent storage patterns (e.g., Azure NetApp Files when appropriate).
  • Support hybrid DR patterns (on-prem ↔ Azure), test plans, and failover/fallback runbooks.

Consulting Leadership & Delivery Excellence

  • Lead discovery workshops, produce architecture proposals, and translate business outcomes into technical designs, effort plans, and success criteria.
  • Direct day-to-day delivery (internal teams and partners), remove blockers, and ensure scope, quality, and timelines meet stakeholder expectations.
  • Create clear Standard Work and SOPs for build/operate/run, including onboarding guides, change procedures, and recovery playbooks; keep artifacts current and auditable.
  • Mentor engineers, promote best practices, and establish a culture of documentation, testing, and continuous improvement.

Security, Compliance & Resilience

  • Enforce least-privilege controls, credential vaulting, MFA, certificate hygiene, and audit logging across platforms.
  • Define and track RTO/RPO targets, recovery assurance tests, and cyber-resilience KPIs; drive remediation of findings from tabletop and live exercises.
  • Partner with InfoSec/GRC to align backup/restore, immutability, and DR controls to enterprise policies and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years in enterprise storage/backup with deep hands-on mastery of NetApp ONTAP, SnapCenter, SnapMirror (sync/async), and SnapMirror Active Sync.
  • 5+ years administering Commvault at scale, including Metallic 365, Air Gap Protect, Clean Room Recovery, VMware and file-server backups.
  • Strong VMware vSphere expertise (VADP, proxies, CBT, datastore integration with NetApp).
  • Solid Azure experience (IaaS, storage tiers/immutability, network fundamentals, identity integration).
  • Proven leadership delivering complex programs, writing SOPs/Standard Work, and guiding cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency with automation (PowerShell, REST APIs; Python/Ansible a plus), and infrastructure-as-code patterns for repeatability.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
