About the Role

The Athletic is looking for a journalist with experience in data visualization, statistics and engineering to help advance its mission of being the world’s best destination for sports fans. This is a wide-ranging, generalist role on the Athletic’s Visuals and Data team, with opportunities to help shape projects of all kinds, whether it’s a modest chart, an analytical conclusion, an expansive standalone visualization or a live application. 

This is 100% remote for candidates based in the United States or Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Use data and analysis to communicate our reporting stronger and more clearly.
  • Publish clear, compelling and imaginative data visualizations.
  • Help imagine and build interactive projects and applications.
  • Consult and advise on our use of statistics and editorial conclusions from data.

Requirements

  • Experience working with data and statistics and an understanding of the communication of causality, uncertainty and statistical forecasting.
  • Experience conceiving, prototyping and deploying interactive projects of all sizes, from engineering foundations to frontend details.
  • A creative approach to the news and sports, with an eye for finding novel angles and data sets in odd places.
  • A track record of close collaboration with other journalists and technologists.
  • Demonstrated excellence in publishing data visualizations for mass audiences.
  • Experience working within design tools like Figma or Adobe Creative Suite.
  • This is a remote-based role with candidates willing to work regularly from our New York City office preferred.

The annual base salary range for this role is $110,000.00 - $180,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non-cash rewards and benefits. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.

For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits may include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company-matching 401(k) plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.

For roles outside of the U.S., information on benefits will be provided during the interview process.
