LTS is seeking an experienced Starburst Data Engineer to support a large-scale data modernization initiative with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). In this role, you will help design and optimize secure, high-performance data access across complex enterprise systems that support critical services for U.S. Veterans.

You’ll work hands-on with Starburst Enterprise Platform (SEP), Trino, and modern cloud data ecosystems to enable data federation, governance, and analytics across hybrid and multi-cloud environments. This is a highly collaborative role where engineering, security, and data strategy intersect. By modernizing how data is accessed, secured, and optimized, you will help improve decision-making, operational efficiency, and service delivery at a national scale.

What You’ll Do:
• Design, build, and optimize distributed query solutions using Starburst Enterprise Platform (SEP) and Trino
• Enable secure and governed access to data across multiple sources including cloud platforms, data lakes, and enterprise data warehouses
• Implement and enhance data federation, performance tuning, and query optimization strategies
• Support identity and access management (IAM) and data governance requirements in a federal environment
• Develop and maintain backend services, APIs, and platform components supporting the data ecosystem
• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, observability, and platform reliability initiatives
• Collaborate with product, UX, security, and infrastructure teams to deliver scalable and secure data solutions
• Troubleshoot performance issues in distributed and cloud-native environments

What We’re Looking For:
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (Master’s preferred)
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
• Hands-on experience with Starburst Enterprise Platform (SEP) or strong experience with Trino/Presto in enterprise environments
• 8+ years of experience working with modern data platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, Denodo, or similar distributed query/data virtualization technologies
• Strong SQL skills and experience with distributed query performance optimization
• Experience integrating data across cloud and on-premises environments
• Knowledge of authentication, authorization frameworks, and data security best practices
• Experience with CI/CD tools, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and infrastructure automation
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (Azure experience strongly preferred)
• Strong communication and collaboration skills in cross-functional technical teams

Nice to Have:
• Experience supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or other federal civilian agencies
• Familiarity with Public Trust or other federal security environments
• Experience working with sensitive data (PHI/PII) in regulated systems
• Background in data mesh, data virtualization, or federated data architectures

What’s In It for You?
• The Opportunity to support high-visibility federal missions
• A culture that values innovation, growth, and collaboration
• Access to cutting-edge tools and technologies
• Comprehensive benefits for you and your family
• A career path that rewards ambition and performance

If you’re ready to push boundaries, sharpen your skills, and join a team that is passionate about building what’s next, we’d love to meet you. Apply today and let’s build a future together!

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
