MongoDB’s mission is to empower innovators to create, transform, and disrupt industries by unleashing the power of software and data. We enable organizations of all sizes to easily build, scale, and run modern applications by helping them modernize legacy workloads, embrace innovation, and unleash AI. Our industry-leading developer data platform, MongoDB Atlas, is the only globally distributed, multi-cloud database and is available in more than 115 regions across AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Atlas allows customers to build and run applications anywhere—on premises, or across cloud providers. With offices worldwide and over 175,000 new developers signing up to use MongoDB every month, it’s no wonder that leading organizations, like Samsung and Toyota, trust MongoDB to build next-generation, AI-powered applications.

As a Staff Technical Program Manager for Core Database Availability, you will own the successful delivery of complex, cross-functional initiatives focused on enterprise-grade database reliability, availability, and operational excellence. You will partner closely with Product Management, Engineering, Performance Testing, and Field-facing teams to execute against our workload management vision, uncover solutions to technical challenges, and ensure MongoDB continues to set the standard for database reliability in mission-critical environments.

This role will be based remotely in the United States.

Position Expectations
  • Drive the execution of MongoDB's core database availability initiatives across multiple engineering teams, translating strategic goals into concrete, measurable delivery plans
  • Partner with Product Management to define technical success metrics for database reliability, focusing on performance during high-load scenarios and enterprise workloads
  • Develop and implement program management frameworks that balance agility with process rigor appropriate for mission-critical database systems
  • Lead cross-functional teams through complex technical challenges related to workload management, resource allocation, and operational resilience
  • Track program success with KPIs aligned to availability SLAs, performance metrics under load, and reduction in operator burden
  • Establish and optimize processes for testing, validating, and deploying workload management features in enterprise environments
  • Identify technical dependencies, risks, and blockers across workstreams, driving resolution and maintaining program momentum
  • Create comprehensive documentation and dashboards to provide visibility into program status, key metrics, and business outcomes
  • Coordinate with Support, Customer Success, and Field Engineering to gather operational feedback and ensure successful implementation of workload management features
  • Champion a program culture of urgency, accountability, and quality in every phase—from planning through post-mortems
  • Lead communication and status reporting to executive stakeholders across Engineering and Product
  • Mentor junior TPMs on database reliability best practices and lead by example in program delivery excellence
  • Embody MongoDB's core values and leadership principles while advancing our database workload management capabilities
The right candidate for this role will be
  • Experienced with 10+ years working in engineering organizations leading complex technical programs, with at least 3 years focused on databases, distributed systems, or cloud infrastructure
  • Experienced with 5+ years of software development background, ideally with exposure to database internals or performance optimization
  • Proven success driving complex systems programs in domains like distributed systems, databases, or cloud platforms
  • Able to partner with technical stakeholders in methodically breaking down engineering challenges related to database workload management, resource allocation, and operational resilience
  • Able to participate in technical design discussions for distributed systems and articulate trade-offs between performance, reliability, implementation complexity, and operational complexity
  • Skilled at communicating complex technical concepts across diverse stakeholders, from database engineers to enterprise customers
  • Deeply knowledgeable about enterprise workload patterns, database performance characteristics, observability, and reliability engineering principles
  • Hyper-organized and capable of coordinating across multiple engineering teams working on interdependent database components
  • A role model for effective execution practices in mission-critical systems, driven by an attuned sense of priority and urgency
  • Able to leverage experience in database program delivery to influence improvements to our tools, operations, and architecture
  • Trained in working with project tracking software (e.g., Jira) for complex technical initiatives
  • Familiar with MongoDB's database architecture or comparable distributed database technologies
Nice to have!
  • Experience with performance optimization and workload management in enterprise database environments
  • Familiarity with MongoDB or other distributed databases
  • Knowledge of database reliability engineering and SRE practices
  • Experience with database monitoring, observability, and performance analysis tools
  • Background in capacity planning and resource optimization for high-scale database deployments

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
