The vision

PlayStation’s Game Development & Future Technology (GDFT) group is transforming our console DNA into a low-latency cloud platform, streaming immersive worlds to every screen from TVs, handhelds, and devices we haven’t invented yet. If you relish tough software engineering challenges and want your code to delight millions of players, let’s talk!

What you’ll own & do
  • Code where it counts - Design & write software for Linux servers and embedded hardware. Program in Rust / C++, land production ready code, and unblock teammates with targeted spikes and reviews.

  • Lead by influence - Forge alignment across teams and stakeholders. Champion innovation within the team to inspire creative solutions to problems.

  • Zoom fluidly from architectural blueprint to keyboard - Architect solutions and then roll up your sleeves to code, unblock teammates, and/or jump-start critical projects whenever needed.

  • Communicate & Collaborate - Work in a small Agile team; planning, reviewing, and demoing each sprint.

You’re a great fit if you have
  • BS in Computer Science / Software Engineering.

  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including recent hands-on coding.

  • Expertise in Rust (or a willingness to learn it) and/or modern C++, with the ability to drop to C for low-level work if needed.

  • Deep knowledge of Linux and/or BSD internals.

  • Comfort developing, deploying and operating containerized services on Kubernetes at scale. Experience developing Kubernetes operators is desirable.

  • Detective-level debugging skills and being able to communicate with SREs to chase down issues.

  • Ability to develop with observability in mind.

  • A track record of technical leadership guiding teams without hard authority.

  • Exceptional communication skills, you toggle effortlessly between white-boarding with engineers to summarizing trade-offs for leadership.

  • Excitement for open-ended problems, turning fuzzy ideas into solutions.

  • Curiosity on emerging tech, including AI dev tools and introducing those that are pragmatic and boost developer velocity.

 Bonus XP
  • You take ownership of problems and feel empowered to fix them.

  • Bridge cultures and time zones when steering joint initiatives with overseas teammates.

  • You spot gaps, draft solutions, and rally teammates without waiting for detailed specs.

  • You stay calm when priorities change (they will), communicate trade-offs, and keep momentum.

  • Thrive in fast iterative cycles with quick reviews that drive continuous improvement and progress.

  • Proven track record scaling services to millions of users.

  • Familiarity with Git best practices.

  • Knowledge of Japanese language and culture is a plus.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
