Since 2011, our mission hasn’t changed — we’re here to stop breaches, and we’ve redefined modern security with the world’s most advanced AI-native platform. Our customers span all industries, and they count on CrowdStrike to keep their businesses running, their communities safe and their lives moving forward. We’re also a mission-driven company. We’re always looking to add talented CrowdStrikers to the team who have limitless passion, a relentless focus on innovation and a fanatical commitment to our customers, our community and each other. Ready to join a mission that matters? The future of cybersecurity starts with you.

About the Role:

CrowdStrike’s Data Science team is expanding, and we are looking for a Staff Scientist to help shape the future of cybersecurity through cutting-edge machine learning and AI research. Operating at the intersection of advanced research and impactful engineering, this role is ideal for an experienced scientist ready to guide strategic investigations, influence product direction, and contribute to the broader scientific community.

As a Staff Scientist, you will be embedded within our world-class Data Science organization, collaborating with technical experts, junior researchers, and executive leadership alike. You will explore novel applications of AI/ML across CrowdStrike’s unique and massive data assets — including over 500 billion behavioral events daily — to deliver powerful threat detection capabilities and security solutions.

This is a high-impact role focused on innovation, mentorship, and external visibility. You’ll operate autonomously in underdefined research areas while ensuring alignment with CrowdStrike’s broader strategic priorities.

What You’ll Do:

  • Stay up to date with academic and industry research in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, identify areas of opportunity for CrowdStrike, and advise executive staff.

  • Conduct independent research and experiments in strategic areas; keep stakeholders informed of relevant outcomes; solicit input on directions and applicability.

  • Collaborate with data scientists and researchers in the Data Science department to ensure quality research output and alignment with departmental research objectives; guide junior researchers.

  • Collaborate with the Data Science Strategy team to create a research agenda.

  • Represent the department’s research through academic papers, industry conference presentations, and blog posts.

  • Identify applications of representation learning and self-supervised learning to large databases of unlabeled security data; identify uses of foundation models to cybersecurity classification problems; identify novel application of Generative AI systems to cybersecurity challenges.

What You’ll Need:

  • At least 8 years experience in industry or academic research.

  • Expert in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence and its mathematical underpinnings.

  • Ability to independently operate in novel and underdefined problem areas.

  • Collaborate in a remote work environment and communicate complex problems effectively.

  • Proven ability to thrive in ambiguous or underdefined problem domains with minimal oversight.

  • Demonstrated track record of original research and innovation in ML/AI, preferably in security-related domains.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across functions and influence mixed audiences.

  • Experience working in remote-first environments, with a self-driven approach to productivity and engagement.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
