Summary
GeneDx, the world's leading genomic diagnostics company, is seeking a Staff Network Engineer to join our Cloud Admin and Engineering team.
This role focuses on cloud and hybrid networking across multiple environments, ensuring secure, reliable, and scalable connectivity that underpins our genomic data platforms. Unlike broader cloud engineering roles, this position is deeply vertical in networking, blending architecture with hands-on implementation.
As a Staff-level engineer, you will design and implement advanced networking solutions, support development teams with connectivity challenges, and enable end users by developing troubleshooting processes and training CloudEng team members and IT Support. You’ll be expected to research complex networking options, present data-driven recommendations, and gain alignment with engineering leadership and business stakeholders.
Potential initiatives for this role include the architectural design of a next-gen VPN solution, optimization of routing and quality of service (QoS) controls, enhancement of network visibility and telemetry, integration with third-party platforms and monitoring tools, and developing strategies to minimize bulk data transfer costs.
Job Responsibilities
- Architecture & Design
- Lead design of multi-cloud and hybrid networking architectures (VPC/VNet, transit gateways, DRGs, VPN, SDN overlays, load balancers, DNS, routing).
- Create and implement standards for third-party integrations that are secure, reliable, and cost efficient.
- Evaluate emerging networking technologies and present recommendations to leadership.
- Balance competing requirements—security, scalability, performance, and cost—in architectural decisions.
- Incorporate business continuity (BC) and disaster recovery (DR) requirements into network design and implementation
- Identify the role AI will play in network design and operations at GeneDx to increase network scalability and reliability.
- Implementation & Operations
- Deploy and configure cloud networking components across OCI, AWS, Azure, and brick-and-mortar.
- Build resilient connectivity between on-premises data centers and cloud environments.
- Develop playbooks, automation, and tooling to streamline network operations.
- Support development teams with service connectivity, ingress/egress, and secure access patterns.
- Partner with IT Support and junior engineers to transfer knowledge and improve first-line troubleshooting capabilities.
- Leadership & Collaboration
- Serve as a networking subject matter expert for cross-functional teams.
- Mentor team members on networking practices, cloud connectivity, and troubleshooting.
- Present networking strategies, challenges, and solutions to Director-level and above audiences.
- Influence decisions by presenting research-backed recommendations.
Objectives
- Cloud networking is secure, resilient, and scalable, enabling mission-critical genomic workloads.
- Hybrid connectivity allows seamless collaboration between on-prem and cloud environments, and internal GeneDx users and external third parties.
- Dev and IT teams are equipped with the knowledge and tools to handle first-line network issues.
- Network solutions are modular, evolvable, and cost-efficient, aligned with best practices.
- The Staff Network Engineer is a recognized leader in networking strategy, execution, and mentorship.
Education, Experience, and Skills
- 10+ years of Networking, Cloud Infrastructure, or Systems Administration experience.
- Deep expertise in multi-cloud networking (VPC/VNet peering, IPSec and SSL VPN’s, BGP, routing, SD-WAN, DNS, load balancing).
- Experience with software-defined networking (e.g., Megaport, NSX, Meraki).
- Experience with administering enterprise-grade end-user VPN solutions.
- Familiarity with network monitoring tools like Solarwinds, Wireshark, iperf3, netcat.
- Knowledge of routing concepts like BGP, OSPF, LAGs, MPLS, IS-IS, GRE/IPSec.
- Strong knowledge of hybrid connectivity patterns (FastConnect, DirectConnect, ExpressRoute).
- Familiarity with network security principles (segmentation, firewalling, TLS termination, identity-based access).
- Competence with automation/IaC (Terraform, Ansible, or equivalent).
- Experience with monitoring & observability for network performance (Grafana, ELK, CloudWatch, etc.).
- Ability to present complex networking concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Proven track record of making recommendations backed by data and convincing stakeholders of technical direction.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
