Our mission is to accelerate the exploration of Earth’s final frontier—the ocean—by pioneering autonomous technologies and unlocking transparent, actionable intelligence.
We believe that understanding the ocean is essential to thriving on this planet and beyond. The ocean is not just a vast body of water—it is the foundation of our climate, our resources, our communications, and our energy. As critical infrastructure increasingly moves beneath the waves, our ability to explore, map, and safeguard the ocean’s bedrock becomes vital.
We’re not just connecting the world by sea—we’re revealing the deep, unseen structure that connects all life. To secure our future, we must first understand the ground beneath us, the foundation of our civilization.
The RoleWe are seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer to join our team and support the design of our autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and other subsea and production equipment. More importantly we want someone who at the core wants to solve challenging physical problems that will unlock capabilities to further realize our mission.
What You'll DoOwning system or subsystem level designs of new subsea vehicle systems and the supporting equipment:
Communicate between cross-functional team of mechanical, electrical, and software engineers
Develop functional requirements
Create rough concepts through sketches or other expedient medium
Design in CAD and verify with FEA and other software tools
Create part and assembly drawings
Manage Bill of Materials
Fabricate prototypes
Design and build electromechanical test fixtures
Build and test first articles
Getting hands dirty and/or being involved in field testing
Distilling a chaotic, fast paced environment into structured and detailed solutions
Assisting with the handoff of new designs to Production
Supporting Production technicians during early build cycles
Experience & Expertise
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Ocean Engineering from an accredited institution
8+ years of experience in the engineering process, including concept development, analysis, design, drawing, integration and testing of complex mechanical and/or ocean deployed systems
Shipped and deployed products at scale
Proficiency in engineering software such as Autodesk Inventor, CAD, FEA, CFD,
Proficiency to independently perform engineering analysis, such as structural, dynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, materials, machine design, etc.
Experience in integrating with electronics assemblies including printed circuit board (PCB) design and harness routing
Experienced with design for manufacturing (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) methodologies
Experienced with advanced manufacturing techniques, such as additive manufacturing, laser cutting, and CNC machining
Experienced with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies
Experienced with production documentation, such as work instructions, process maps, and control plans
Technically manage projects of small scope
Strong problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with changing priorities
Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Strong hands-on build, fabrication, assembly, and test experience. Willing to roll up your sleeves to deliver and complete the design through field testing
Must be local to the Bay Area or willing to relocate
Bonus Experience
Experience with subsea equipment or marine systems including launch and recovery
Experience with robotics systems
Experience using additive printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines.
Familiarity with programming or scripting languages, such as javascript, C++, or MATLAB
We are seeking mission oriented, purpose driven teammates who are willing to push boundaries to learn and execute when things seem impossible. The ocean is the ultimate level playing field, anyone can go, but not many can build successful systems that can survive and thrive in earth’s last frontier. We get to illuminate the darkness, explore the unknown, and be first to see what we can discover. We can see everything on earth, except in the depths of the sea.
