Job Description:

The Robotics and Digital Solutions (RAD) group, part of the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, is recruiting for a Staff Mechanical Engineer to join our Strategic Robotics R&D Team, based in Santa Clara, CA. Remote work may be considered on a case-by-case basis, subject to company approval. This is a Part Time role.

What We Do:

The Strategic Robotics R&D team envisions a future for robotic intervention that is targeted, minimally invasive, and personalized. Building upon a deep understanding of patient and physician needs, we are developing a platform for the next evolution of soft-tissue robotic care.

Who We Are:

We are a team of mechanical, electrical, mechatronics, robotic controls, software, and clinical engineers who are passionate about improving patient care. The team includes a wide range of experience levels, from junior engineers to industry experts. We follow an iterative design approach to product development that requires us to collaborate closely across clinical, capital hardware, and instruments & accessories teams. We value autonomy and empower each other to take action while remaining a supportive and closely knit team. We take pride in our culture and are committed to building an environment that is inclusive and promotes diversity of thought through varied experiences and backgrounds.

You:

As a member of the Strategic Robotics R&D team, you will join us on our journey to design and build one of the world's most advanced medical robotic platforms. You will work alongside all engineering functions to make significant contributions to the mechanical design of our capital hardware, which includes (but is not limited to) custom actuator design, structural design, and sensor development. This role offers a high degree of autonomy and opportunities for growth within the team as we progress towards realizing our vision.

Performance Objectives and Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop robotic capital hardware for use in surgical room environments.

  • Iterate quickly on proof-of-concept prototypes, implement long-term commercial design solutions, and engage with vendors.

  • Own design & integration of key robot arm components, and work semi-autonomously on robotic hardware development projects.

  • Influence and drive architectural decisions, incorporating applicable learnings from past designs.

  • Occasional travel to J&J or vendor sites may be required.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or other related Engineering degree with 8+ years of experience developing mechanical hardware.

  • 5+ years of experience designing surgical robotics hardware.

  • Deep knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals (e.g., mechanisms, materials, FEA, GD&T).

  • Proven experience integrating electromechanical components (including PCBAs, motors, sensors, cable harnesses, and connectors) into surgical robot applications.

  • Experience using SolidWorks (or equivalent CAD package), including the ability to create models, assemblies, and detailed drawings, following best design practices and standards.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to work remotely as part of a hybrid team.

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Existing familiarity with hardware architecture of Ottava (or similar).

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
