Job Overview

Mainspring is seeking Staff Mechanical Design Engineers with a focus on designing electrical enclosures and cables while improving functionality and system-level performance. This role will involve not only owning engineering development projects but also taking a leadership role in guiding technical decisions and influencing the design process across teams. You will manage and mentor cross-functional teams to ensure that key electrical subsystems meet challenging technical requirements from concept through manufacturing launch. In some cases, this role may directly manage engineers, providing leadership while ensuring that all team members work towards a cohesive project goal. Ideal candidates will have a strong combination of technical expertise, leadership abilities, and the drive to solve complex problems in a collaborative environment.

Core responsibilities

  • Lead brainstorming and technical review sessions to develop innovative solutions that enhance the performance and cost-efficiency of the Linear Generator and electrical subsystems
  • Take full ownership of the design, optimization, and execution of key electrical hardware, balancing cost reduction, safety improvements, and system-level reliability
  • Collaborate with reliability and test teams to validate systems and components, ensuring fast iteration cycles and incorporating feedback to drive the next-generation deployment of the Linear Generator
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical engineering, manufacturing engineering, NPI, and external suppliers to deploy new designs into production, ensuring all systems meet the necessary performance and manufacturability requirements
  • Lead the development cycle of electrical hardware, including requirements development, prototyping, testing, iteration, and tooling, ensuring project milestones are met and resources are allocated effectively
  • Oversee the execution of the project by guiding and coordinating efforts across multiple engineering disciplines to maintain a cohesive direction
  • Mentor and support junior engineers, guiding them through technical challenges, offering advice on design strategies, and helping to develop their skills while working towards project goals
  • Proactively prioritize activities, balancing project timelines, resources, and risks to ensure consistent delivery on critical engineering initiatives

Qualifications

  • Degree: BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or a similar engineering field from an accredited institution. Experience and degree will determine the level, with the following minimum requirements: Staff Level: BS + 11 years or MS + 10 years
  • Proven experience taking ownership of electrical enclosure and/or cable design, including architectural decisions and managing cross-functional teams or guiding team efforts in both disciplines
  • Strong expertise in sheet metal design for medium-volume production, electrical component specification, mechanical design for electrical systems, and design-for-manufacturability challenges
  • A solid understanding of electrical engineering principles and thermal modeling, and the ability to integrate them effectively into larger system designs
  • Extensive experience in SolidWorks and PDM (or a similar CAD version control system). Experience with CFD, FEA, and programs like SolidWorks Flow Simulation or Ansys is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex technical decisions, influence the direction of designs, and coordinate with teams to achieve successful outcomes
  • A strong desire to mentor and develop junior engineers, providing guidance to help them grow and succeed in their roles
  • Passion for creating innovative and cost-effective solutions to enable the large-scale deployment of zero-carbon energy technologies

Does your experience not meet all of our posted requirements? Studies have shown that some people are less likely to apply to positions unless they meet every listed requirement. At Mainspring, we are committed to building a diverse, inclusive, flexible, and collaborative environment, so if you want to help us transition the world to clean and affordable electricity, and don’t meet all posted requirements for a particular role, we’d still love to hear from you. Mainspring can sometimes be flexible enough to shift responsibilities for the right person, or otherwise identify open or upcoming roles that may better fit your professional background.

In more traditional words, Mainspring Energy, Inc is an Equal Opportunity Employer. What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
