Join our growing team at Vetcove, and help us transform how veterinarians buy the supplies they need to keep America's pets healthy. Vetcove's eCommerce and mobile platforms enable veterinary practices to compare and buy from all of their vendors in one place. Our community of more than 17,000 veterinary hospitals employs tens of thousands of veterinarians, and delivers care to many millions of animals every year across all 50 states. We’re a growing team on a mission to modernize the $50B+ animal health industry. Simply put, Vetcove helps veterinary organizations spend more time giving care, and less time shopping and comparing across vendors to supply their practices. Vetcove is a Y Combinator and venture-backed growth stage company with notable investors in Silicon Valley and NYC. We're looking for exceptionally talented and passionate people to join our growing team.

About the Position

Vetcove is seeking a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to lead critical initiatives that bring machine learning into the core of our platform. You’ll design, build, and deploy models that drive clinical insights, financial outcomes, and operational efficiency for veterinary practices. From predicting inventory needs to surfacing missed charges, the systems you create will directly improve the lives of veterinarians, their staff, and the pet parents they serve.

This role sits at the intersection of data, engineering, and product. The models you build—and the infrastructure you design around them—will shape how tens of thousands of clinics make decisions every day. You’ll collaborate with engineering leadership, product managers, and veterinary professionals to scope problems, design solutions, and deploy them into production.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone who thrives on owning end-to-end ML systems, enjoys writing Python to bring models into production, and is motivated by building solutions that make a measurable difference in real-world outcomes. Since our ML systems run in production, strong Python engineering skills are key to being successful in this role.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and deploy production ML systems: Build, train, and launch machine learning models that power Vetcove’s core products

  • Build evaluation frameworks: Create tools and processes to evaluate, monitor, and retrain models so they stay accurate and trusted over time

  • Integrate models into the platform: Develop APIs and services that let product and engineering teams seamlessly use ML in everyday features

  • Integrate LLMs: Incorporate LLMs and multimodal models into production systems to improve explanations, clinical insights, and user-facing features

  • Work with modern ML platforms and tools: Use frameworks like PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, and Snowflake ML to bring models from development into production

  • Own ML pipelines and data workflows: Design and maintain the data flows, feature stores, and model registries that keep ML systems running smoothly

  • Support real-time and batch use cases: Build systems that deliver predictions instantly (like flagging a missed charge on an invoice) and on a schedule (like nightly inventory forecasts)

  • Collaborate closely with experts: Work hand-in-paw with product managers, engineers, and veterinary experts to scope problems and design solutions

  • Contribute production-quality code: Write and review Python code for training, inference, and integration, keeping models maintainable and performant

  • Shape ML best practices: Help set standards for experimentation, deployment, monitoring, and ethical data use across the team

  • Mentor and guide: Share your expertise with teammates, supporting their growth while leading high-impact ML initiatives

Some Projects You’ll Work On

  • Charge Capture Model: Build models that identify potential missed billable treatments from visit notes and exam transcriptions, with real-time flagging at invoice finalization and LLM-powered natural language explanations for clinicians

  • Inventory Forecasting Model: Develop and productionize forecasting systems that predict clinic inventory needs, optimize reorder thresholds, and reduce stockouts

  • Client LTV Calculator: Create models to forecast client lifetime value and churn risk, enabling targeted retention and marketing campaigns

You should have

  • Familiarity with Snowflake ML, Databricks, or other ML orchestration tools

  • 6+ years of experience building and deploying machine learning models in production

  • Strong proficiency in Python and experience contributing to production applications

  • Hands-on experience with modern ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn)

  • Experience designing and maintaining ML pipelines, feature stores, and data workflows

  • Familiarity with LLMs and experience integrating them into user-facing applications

  • Comfort working with structured and unstructured data, and selecting appropriate modeling techniques (e.g., time series, gradient boosting, survival analysis)

  • Experience with model evaluation, monitoring, and retraining in live environments

  • Knowledge of common data science approaches for personalization, forecasting, or anomaly detection

Tools We Use

  • Backend: Python (Django, Django Rest Framework)

  • Data Tools: Hex, Snowflake

  • Datastores: Postgres, Elasticsearch, Redis, Clickhouse

  • Version Control: Git

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
