Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn't work together.
So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions - to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes - large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We're building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.
The Role
The Trust Web team is a core part of Square's Growth product organization, focused on helping more sellers to begin using Square. Aligned with our strategy to Simplify, Automate, and Graduate seller experiences, we build and maintain web experiences that guide sellers from signup to first payment. Our work directly supports Square's growth by improving onboarding, engagement, and seller success.
We are looking for a product-minded Senior Software Engineer with strong frontend expertise to help develop and improve the web experiences and platform capabilities owned by Trust Web. In this role, you will lead key projects, take ownership of complex features, and collaborate closely with cross-functional partners to deliver impactful and reliable user experiences. You will help evolve our identity web platform, influence engineering best practices, and contribute to a culture of high-velocity execution.
You Will
  • Lead end-to-end development of features and enhancements across onboarding, identity, and trust-related web experiences.
  • Build and scale React applications held to high standards for performance, maintainability, and accessibility.
  • Partner with Product and Design to turn requirements and user insights into simple, effective seller experiences.
  • Contribute to architectural discussions and help evolve Trust Web's frontend systems and shared components.
  • Collaborate with platform and infrastructure teams to improve tooling, developer workflows, and system reliability.
  • Provide technical mentorship within the team, supporting growth of peers through code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies-including AI-enabled development tools-and apply them where they enhance team velocity or product quality.

You Have
  • Candidates in this role typically have 8+ years of industry experience and a BS Degree in Computer Science.
  • Strong experience building modern frontend applications, particularly with React and related technologies.
  • Experience owning features or subsystems within a broader product area and a proven record of successful launches.
  • Great communication skills and an ability to work cross-functionally with partners in Design and Product.
  • A sense of customer empathy and desire to influence product direction.
  • Understanding and curiosity in creating well thought out, reliable, and performant frontend systems.

Technologies We Use and Teach
  • Languages: JavaScript, Typescript
  • Frameworks: React, Ember
  • Testing: Jest, Playwright
  • Tools: LaunchDarkly, Storybook, Snowflake, Sentry, Datadog

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
