The Position

We are a rapidly growing healthcare technology company seeking a Staff Data Engineer. Reporting to Director of Data Engineering, you will be responsible for delivering on many data engineering initiatives towards our Data Aggregation product roadmap.

As a Staff Engineer, you will own and drive multiple major workstreams by refining requirements, creating design documents, delivering rapid prototypes and POCs, tasking out detailed implementation plans and overseeing the implementation using a mix of onshore and offshore resources.  You will help give a weekly status on the workstream and help drive work forward by reviewing PRs, doing UAT that work was done as expected, and that it was deployed to production and operational.  You will help demo the completed workstream to the rest of the business and facilitate transitioning ownership of each service built to an operations support team with the help of metrics, dashboards, alarms and runbook documentation.

The workstreams are generally related to developing a secure, robust and scalable data pipeline with software components for ingesting, validating, mastering, transforming, analyzing, and reporting on complex health care data. The software transforms disparate data into actionable, meaningful insights for our customers. You will be a critical member of a product and engineering steam that is building a unique healthcare software solution.


Key Accountabilities
  • Designs, builds and oversees the deployment and operation of technology architecture, solutions and software to capture, manage, store and utilize structured and unstructured data from internal and external sources. 
  • Be self-driven, organized and able to communicate work plans and progress effectively.
  • Create detailed design documents with complexity that matches that of the workstream.
  • Produce high-level, architecture, data-flow, sequence, process and other diagrams as appropriate to help other engineers, support and business stakeholders understand the systems that you propose to build.  Own and update them as features evolve.
  • Lead offshore software engineers by tasking out & grooming work items in Jira, responding to questions & escalations during development, supporting UAT and deployments to Prod.
  • Lead by example and provide hands-on support when other engineers get blocked.
  • Personally take on the hardest, riskiest or most ambitious tasks that can’t be effectively outsourced to other engineers.
  • Assist in coordinating work dependencies between Data Platform and other teams.
  • Identify and solve repetitive development friction areas by making improvements to the developer experience:  Scripts, IDE, Build, CI/CD, IaC, Process, Documentation, etc.
  • Support other teams & coworkers by participating in other workstream design reviews, reviewing impactful Pull Requests or other changes.
  • Participate in a team rotation to fill out an Operational Review for each 2 week sprint period by taking snapshots of system dashboards, investigating anomalies and identifying opportunities where our team can improve operational excellence. (Does not include wearing a pager or being on-call)
  • Securely handle PHI and comply with policies that support HIPPA and SOC2.
  • Strategically apply AI tooling to deliver work, and use AI services where it makes sense.
  • Help drive a team culture of collective hard work toward our shared purpose, encourage engineering & operational excellence, constantly measure & emphasize the impact of our work and support occasional fun, social and learning events.
  • Give tech talks and demos to other engineers to help continuing education & training.
  • Be willing to pivot occasionally to support a high-stakes request from customer-facing teams.
  • Participate in week-long quarterly planning and roadmap meetings in-person.
  • (For many cities) Participate in local office gatherings 1x every 2 months for Town Hall.
Who You Are

Requirements:

  • 5 years leading other software engineers
  • Expertise in data architecture and business intelligence systems including ELT development, data transformation, data modeling, report design / development and BI dashboard design / development.
  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • 5 years of Python experience
  • 5 years of Typescript experience
  • 5 years of SQL experience including complex joins, query performance, triggers, views
  • 5 years of experience with Infrastructure as Code tooling, preferably CDK
  • Deep expertise & certifications on AWS

Preferred:

  • Experience with ETL tooling on AWS like PySpark, Lake Formation and Glue
  • Familiarity with Golang
  • Experience with Kinesis data streaming
  • Experience working with visualization tools like Tableau
  • Familiarity with HIPAA/SOC/HITRUST requirements
