POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Programs Accounting Manager, the Staff Accountant supports the timely and accurate accounting of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’s Catholic Education Foundation, Dedicated Gift Trust, Tidings, Cardinal McIntyre Fund, Together in Mission, and other programs, as needed. This includes the monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting cycles, as well as external audits, IRS form 990s, and other applicable compliance reporting. The position collaborates actively with personnel in the various programs to build strong relationships and provide innovative solutions to advance their respective ministries.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Because all Archdiocesan employees represent the Roman Catholic Church, they are expected to conduct themselves according to the goals and mission of the Church in performing their work.
The Staff Accountant shall act in a manner consistent with the official teachings, doctrines, and laws of the Roman Catholic Church, as set forth in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the policies of the archdiocese as set forth in the online Administrative Handbook.
Transactional
- Reconcile bank accounts and record payment applications
- Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting activities, including preparation and review of journal entries, reconciliations, and full-cycle accounting (Assets, Liabilities, Revenue, Expenses)
- Crosstrain with other Financial Services team members to provide back up for key responsibilities
- Perform ad hoc assignments, as necessary
Compliance and Reporting
- Assist with third party independent audits, reviews, tax, and other compliance reporting
- Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP), non-profit accounting standards, and relevant regulations
- Maintain company policies and procedures and desktop procedure documentation
- Maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure reporting accuracy
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Associate’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration
- At least one to three years of related work experience
Preferred Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting with plans to sit Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam
- Knowledge and application of nonprofit fund accounting
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- US GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting
- Nonprofit, fund, or grant accounting
- Mid-tier or large ERP system, preferably Microsoft Dynamics (Navigator)
- Integrating generative artificial intelligence into financial services department workflows
- Reconciliation software or similar systems
- Nonprofit operations and the unique needs of decentralized, religious, mission-driven organizations
Skills in:
- Enterprise financial systems (examples include Workday, Oracle, NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Blackbaud Financial Edge, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar).
- Microsoft Office, particularly MS Excel.
- Strong written, analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills, with a high degree of emotional intelligence and integrity. Ability to translate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Generative and/or agentic artificial intelligence as they apply to financial staffing and workflows.
Ability to:
- This position is based in the Archdiocesan Catholic Center (Chancery Office) in the Mid-Wilshire district of Los Angeles; the archdiocese has many locations in Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara Counties in California. This position requires some travel to the various locations.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
- Ability to lift to 20 lbs.
- Ability to sit for sustained periods of time daily, stand, walk, bend, crouch, reach above and below shoulder level, push, pull, grasp, or twist on an intermittent basis.
- Utilization of keyboard, phone equipment, and other office equipment
- Exposure to office environment level of noise, temperature, and lighting
- Busy office environment; frequent interruptions; multiple entities in large, complex, and diverse organization.
Pay Range
$28.85 - $36.06
