About the team
We're looking for a leader to own and drive technical strategy for web performance across Slack. The ideal candidate has passion and expertise in crafting high-performance web applications.
As Web Performance TL, you'll use TypeScript, React, Redux, HTML, and CSS to improve Slack's web client, a complex in-browser application relied upon by millions of users every day. You will work with real-time data streams, engineer for performance across browsers, and delight people by making the best software we can imagine. Slack's scale and complexity requires digging deep into UI and state management architecture, making optimizations beyond the concerns of most web applications.
You will to conceptualize, design, build and deliver new architecture projects to continually improve Slack's end-user experience.
What you will be doing:

• You'll lead full-time project work for a direct team of FE web engineers

• You'll oversee technical strategy, guidelines, and cross-team efforts for web performance across all of Slack's web engineering teams

• You'll collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, and Executive leadership across Slack to propose and prioritize the web performance technical roadmap

• You’ll propose, prototype, and evaluate ideas for improving Slack’s web performance frameworks, bottlenecks, and observability

• You'll monitor, learn about, and evaluate new web technologies and potential long-term investments

• You'll author code that sets the standard for quality and velocity for your team, and establishes patterns for other teams to follow

• You'll help triage bugs and troubleshoot production issues

• You'll mentor other engineers and deeply review code

What you should have:

• 10+ years of experience writing client-side JavaScript, TypeScript, and/or React Framework

• Expertise investigating and improving web application performance

• Experience building and debugging complex systems in a team environment, and a desire to sweat the small stuff

• Experience with modern browser technologies

• Experience designing and running experiments to evaluate performance efforts

• Experience as a Tech Lead in driving team technical strategy and overseeing team technical work

• Strong communication skills, a positive attitude, and empathy

• Self-­awareness and a desire to continually improve

Bonus Points

• Experience with WebRTC

• Experience developing an application with long-lived sessions, including updating state with a real-time event stream

For New York-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $251,900 to $384,100.For Washington-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $230,700 to $351,800.
