Description:
· The Senior SQL Server Database Engineer is responsible for the database design, implementation, maintenance, and management of the Enterprise data system.
· He/She provides leadership in technical infrastructure planning, guidance to staff on database systems and technical issues, and mentors team members in best practices.
· This position directs component and data architecture design, technology planning, and testing for Applications Development initiatives to meet business requirements and ensure compliance.
· He/She researches, supports, and leads the integration of cloud technologies.
· This position leads team members with project related activities and tasks.
Job Duties:
· Manages and maintains company data management systems (e.g., operational data stores [relational and non-relational], Data Warehouse, Reporting, etc.), to encompass design, installation, deployment, backup, restoration, optimization, security, and data exchange.
· Develops logical and physical architecture models.
· Manages administration and database performance by tuning file structures and managing indexes.
· Partners with Software Architects and Software Engineers on data access methods and decisions on optimal data structures for persistence.
· Safeguards data integrity and maintains security controls in all existing databases and data exchange technology through process, training, quality control, and monitoring.
· Writes simple to complex SQL queries, troubleshoots queries, and tunes queries for best performance.
· Designs and implements processes to automate transactional information functions in search of maximum operational efficiency throughout the organization.
· Manages data operations for data at rest, data exchange, batch processing, and data reporting.
· Supports development and production activities.
· Generates and maintains documentation of data store architectures, configurations, operations, and maintenance.
· Evaluates Microsoft technology, hot fixes, upgrades, and version releases to ensure architecture stability.
· Configures and manages Microsoft's Windows Server 2008/2012, and SQL Server 2008/2012/2014/2016, demonstrating how these technologies may be leveraged to impact the architecture's overall design, security, availability and stability.
· Leads the migration of on-premises SQL Instances into a cloud environment.
Minimum Requirements/Preferences:
· Must have a Bachelor’s Degree (or internationally comparable degree) or be a current UPS employee with three years of UPS experience
· Must have Microsoft Certification (e.g., Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate, Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert, Microsoft Certified Database Administrator, etc.)
· Must have advanced experience in database administration (e.g., performance tuning, environment availability, and capacity planning)
· Must have expert-level knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server High Availability, Replication, Scalability, and Advanced SQL Server Diagnostic and Tuning Tools
· Must have experience deploying physical and cloud instances of SQL Azure
· Must have experience demonstrating proficiency in at least on noSQL Database technology (e.g., Cassandra, MongoDB, etc.)
· Applies Disaster Recovery Knowledge: Creates disaster recovery plans for own environment and helps document procedures; plans and tests recovery procedures in a remote backup environment.
· Applies Foundation Architecture Knowledge: Demonstrates knowledge of the existence of foundation architecture standards; supports the need to adhere to standards; knows who to ask for information and guidance.
