About Bright Uro:

Bright Uro is a fast-growing medical device startup headquartered in Irvine, CA. Our mission is to improve the lives of millions affected by lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) by developing cutting-edge diagnostic technology that combines advanced hardware, intuitive software, and powerful data analytics – making it easier for clinicians to gain actionable insights while delivering a better patient experience. Our passion lies in advancing urologic care through innovation and building a collaborative, dynamic team to bring transformative solutions to life.

About the Role:

The Senior Software Engineer is a thought leader in a small team focused on the design and delivery of robust software platforms that support Bright Uro’s wireless sensing systems for urology. Working independently and supporting more junior staff, this role focuses on advancing feasibility into reliable, scalable solutions while ensuring alignment with regulatory, clinical, and cross-functional needs. The engineer will contribute across the software lifecycle, from architecture and security to deployment and integration, enabling innovative products that improve patient care.

At this stage, we are a small team that anticipates growing quickly in 2026. This is the opportunity to get in with an exciting company at the ground level and build your own future here; it’s a huge plus if you’ve worked for a startup before.

This is a local role, working at least 2 days per week in-person at our Irvine, CA office

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, evaluate, and implement full stack software including mobile, web, and cloud backend
  • Work closely with team leaders to develop DevOps best practices: CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, observability, incident response
  • Build and evolve reliable, secure, and scalable services (REST/GraphQL/microservices)
  • Own technical design and implementation through testing, rollout, and ongoing support; document and maintain SDLC artifacts (design docs, traceability matrices, processes) to align with QMS and support regulatory submissions
  • Deploy and operate services; we use AWS/Azure/GCP using Docker/Kubernetes
  • Drive security-by-design: secrets management, least privilege, vulnerability remediation, secure coding
  • Integrate and evaluate ML models
  • Oversee the development of testing strategies (Unit/Integration) and Design Verification protocols to verify software/firmware functionality post-acquisition
  • Determine automation needs for lab testing and implement software to facilitate testing and test data management
  • Support software/firmware testing, debugging, and verification efforts using tools such as unit testing frameworks, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations, and automated test environments
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including hardware engineers, systems engineers, quality, regulatory affairs, manufacturing, and PMO to ensure seamless device integration
  • Lead or participate in code reviews and design reviews
  • Document decisions and build reusable components, templates, and patterns
  • Participate in and foster a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and knowledge sharing within the R&D team

Tech Stack Requirements:

  • Strong coding and computer science fundamentals including object-oriented development
  • Front‑end development with technologies such as React/TypeScript, Next.js, Tailwind, or Vue/Angular
  • Back‑end development with technologies such as Node.js/TypeScript, Python/FastApi, C# .NET, Go, or Java
  • APIs: REST, GraphQL, or WebSockets
  • Database development: PostgreSQL/MySQL, Redis, MongoDB, Kafka, or equivalent
  • DevOps: GitHub Actions/GitLab CI/CircleCI, Docker, Kubernetes, Helm
  • Cloud: AWS (ECS/EKS/Lambda/RDS/S3/CloudWatch) or GCP/Azure equivalent
  • Understanding of system monitoring. Experience with observability technologies such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus/Grafana, ELK/EFK, Datadog/New Relic

Skills/Background Requirements:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to contribute technically to and work within cross-functional team environments
  • Strong organizational, multitasking, and documentation skills, with a high level of attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem-solving
  • High personal/professional integrity, trustworthiness, strong work ethic, and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment and maintain a results-oriented, positive, “can-do” attitude and ability to work well under pressure
  • Bachelor’s or higher in Computer Science. Related degrees such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering etc will be considered with strong understanding of CS principles
  • 5+ years of experience in software development; Master’s degree may substitute for one year of experience

Nice to Have

  • Angular/Dart or Flutter/Dart development
  • Kubernetes (EKS/GKE/AKS) and service mesh (Istio/Linkerd)
  • Microservices, CQRS/event sourcing, or serverless architectures
  • Work experience at a startup or similar early-stage company
  • Medical device development experience; this is a highly-regulated industry and if you’re not used to the pace and red tape of getting devices approved, there will be a learning curve
  • Microservice-based architecture design and development of full-stack applications in an FDA-regulated environment or other regulated industry
  • IaC: Terraform
  • Bluetooth development
  • Firmware development

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

    • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
    • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
    • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
    • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
    • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
    • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
