Our healthcare system is the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the U.S. Every year, over 50 million Americans suffer adverse financial consequences as a result of seeking care, from lower credit scores to garnished wages. The challenge is only getting worse, as high deductible health plans are the fastest growing plan design in the U.S.

Cedar’s mission is to leverage data science, smart product design and personalization to make healthcare more affordable and accessible. Today, healthcare providers still engage with its consumers in a “one-size-fits-all” approach; and Cedar is excited to leverage consumer best practices to deliver a superior experience.

The Role

At Cedar, we’re on a mission to simplify the patient billing experience and improve the financial journey in healthcare. As part of this vision, we’re seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our Clarity squad. This core product team is focused on improving healthcare bill transparency, helping patients better understand and manage their healthcare finances. We aim to enhance the experience for all patients while reducing operational burdens for providers and scaling our platform.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be pivotal in shaping our technical direction, driving significant architectural improvements, and delivering measurable impact that directly contributes to these ambitious goals. Cedar is committed to a flexible work environment, so this as well as many of our roles are remote-friendly.

In this position, you will:
  • Lead impactful projects: Own the end-to-end development of features and technical investments, demonstrating and articulating the broad scope and measurable impact of your contributions on our platform, users, and business objectives.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally: Partner closely with product, design, and data science teams to deliver innovative solutions, communicating complex technical concepts clearly, concisely, and with compelling examples.
  • Drive technical clarity: Bring clarity to ambiguous projects, ensuring we build scalable systems that stand the test of time.
  • Ensure high standards for code quality, test coverage, and documentation, actively identifying and addressing technical debt to maintain a healthy codebase.
  • Mentor and inspire: Guide engineers at all levels through technical challenges, sharing best practices and fostering a culture of learning and growth.
  • Advocate for improvements: Identify opportunities to enhance our systems and champion changes that benefit both our clients and patients.
What we look for in an ideal candidate:
  • 8+ years of professional software development experience with a proven track record of leading engineers to solve complex technical problems across the stack.
  • A strong ownership mentality focused on delivering senior-level value through measurable impact on critical systems, user experience, or operational efficiency.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to articulate complex technical ideas clearly, ask insightful clarifying questions and present your work and its impact concisely using relevant examples.
  • A strong commitment to engineering best practices, including writing clean, maintainable, and well-tested code, and a proactive approach to managing technical debt.
  • Comfort navigating ambiguity and a passion for solving complex problems in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
  • Proven experience with Python and Django (or similar modern web frameworks/backend technologies) in a production environment is highly preferred.
  • Excitement about Cedar’s mission and solving meaningful problems for patients, demonstrated by a proactive, growth-oriented mindset and a track record of driving impactful initiatives.

Compensation Range and Benefits:

  • Salary/Hourly Rate Range*: $195,500 - $230,000
  • This role is equity eligible
  • This role offers a competitive benefits and wellness package

*Subject to location, experience, and education

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
