SR. PROPULSION FLUIDS ANALYST, RAPTOR CHAMBER AND NOZZLE

The Raptor Chamber and Nozzle team designs, analyzes, builds, and tests the Thrust Chamber Assembly (TCA) of the Raptor rocket engine for both the Sea Level and Vacuum variants of the engine, including the Nozzle Extension. The TCA interfaces with many other engine components, both upstream and downstream, while operating under extreme pressure and temperature conditions. Propulsion Fluid Analysts have the opportunity to develop innovative improvements to the TCA fluid circuit and take these designs from initial concept to flight.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with propulsion engineers on TCA and related subsystems, performing fluids, CFD, and thermal analysis to drive design decisions and provide verification that reliability and performance requirements are met
  • Proactively anticipate and drive necessary analyses throughout engine component design cycles
  • Take an extremely practical, hands-on approach to model validation/verification, ensuring that model predictions are tied firmly to reality and test data
  • Ability to setup and solve a 1D fluid and thermal model
  • Support performance analysis and troubleshooting of development and flight hardware
  • Drive enhancements to the future-state Sea Level and Vacuum TCAs to enable improved vehicle performance – collaborating closely with other Raptor, Starship, and Booster analysts

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline
  • 5+ years of professional experience in fluids, CFD, and thermal analysis

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree in an engineering discipline
  • Experience with setup, execution, and post-processing using commercially available CFD programs (geometry, mesh generation, and model selection)
  • Running steady-state and transient CFD simulations using ideal and real-fluid equations of state
  • Experience with reacting flows and combustion modeling
  • Ability to create watertight parasolids for CFD using Siemens NX
  • Familiar with CFD tools: StarCCM+, ANSYS CFX, or similar CFD software
  • Experience with conjugate heat transfer simulations
  • Strong fundamentals of compressible and incompressible fluid mechanics, and common fluids hand-calculations
  • Experience with thermal and heat transfer modeling (using ANSYS or other)
  • Strong fundamental understanding of engine cycles used in liquid bipropellant rocket engines
  • Understanding of injector types used in liquid bipropellant rocket engines
  • Proficient in MATLAB, Python, or similar software to automate or script tasks, and to post process data
  • Ability to debug simulations and programs without having to involve customer technical support
  • Familiar with common industry and NASA standards
  • Ability to perform trade studies using first principles and engineering fundamentals to make clear recommendations even with partial information
  • Able to work well in an integrated collaborative team environment, including frequent interactions with technicians, other engineers, and senior management
  • Highly self-motivated with strong organizational and written/oral communication skills – able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment with the ongoing drive for continuous improvement in all aspects of work

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range:

Propulsion Engineer/Senior: $130,000.00 - $180,000.00/per year

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
