Sr. Project Engineer – Vehicle Accessories Interiors

ABOUT Slate

At Slate, we’ve got one job: building a vehicle you’ll fall in love with, right here in the USA. We believe that car buyers—not car companies—should call the shots. We like looking at the road, not the screen. We don’t like paying for stuff we don’t need.
We like picking out the stuff we do need. We think dings are badges, not blemishes. But we know not everyone likes what we like. So, we built you a Slate: you make it yours.

Who we are looking for:

Slate is building a new standard for personalized, purposeful vehicle accessories. As Senior Project Engineer – Interior Accessories & Soft Goods, you’ll lead the technical execution of interior products that elevate both function and style—console organizers, trim kits, cabin storage, pet solutions, and protection systems. You’ll collaborate across design, vehicle integration, and supplier partners to deliver industry-leading fit, finish, and usability.

What you get to do:

  • Own the complete technical development cycle from concept through launch, driving suppliers and partners to bring world-class products to market.
  • Collaborate with industrial and technical designers on accessory products using Catia.
  • Translate design intent into CAD models, 2D drawings, and tech documentation; release via Windchill
  • Partner with suppliers to optimize DFM/DFA, materials, costs, mass, and tooling approaches
  • Ensure proper integration with OEM hardpoints, trim systems, fasteners, and vehicle packaging
  • Lead validation planning and execution (wear, odor, UV, scratch resistance, usability, etc.)
  • Coordinate and track lab and on-vehicle testing to meet durability, quality, and safety targets
  • Ensure compliance with FMVSS, SAE, ASTM, and internal engineering specifications
  • Drive supplier readiness, part maturation, and launch quality with cross-functional teams
  • Communicate technical progress, risks, and resolutions to stakeholders

What you bring to the team:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or related field (MS a plus)
  • 8+ years of experience in interior accessories, cabin systems, or trim components
  • Deep familiarity with interior vehicle integration, packaging, fastener strategies, and soft/hard material interfaces
  • Strong CAD skills in CATIA (V5 or V6); Windchill PLM experience preferred
  • Knowledge of relevant regulatory standards (FMVSS, SAE, ASTM) and validation protocols
  • Supplier-facing engineering experience with a strong foundation in manufacturing and prototyping
  • Self-starter mentality with excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-moving, cross-functional, hands-on environment

Why Join Team Slate?

At Slate, we’re fueled by grit, determination, and attention to detail. The start-up spirit of ingenuity and resourcefulness moves our business forward. Team Slate fosters a culture of excellence, innovation, and mutual respect, and is motivated by shared principles.

  • Safety First
  • Delight Customers
  • One Team
  • Relentless Improvement
  • Fast, Frugal and Scrappy
  • Respectful Collaboration
  • Positive Legacy

Location: Troy, MI or Long Beach, CA (Hybrid)

We want to work with people that reflect the communities in which we operate:

  • Slate is proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action employer. We do not discriminate based upon race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, veteran status, marital status, parental status, cultural background, organizational level, work styles, tenure and life experiences. Or for any other reason.
  • Slate is committed to providing reasonable accommodation for qualified individuals with disabilities in our job application procedures. If you need assistance or accommodation due to a disability, you may contact us at [email protected].

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
