About BoxPower:

BoxPower designs and deploys modular microgrid and renewable energy systems that bring reliable power to remote, underserved, and utility-resilience applications across North America. Our systems integrate solar, battery storage, generators, and advanced controls into deployable, scalable energy solutions. We move fast, solve hard problems, and are committed to making clean energy accessible everywhere it's needed.

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Project Engineer to join our Engineering team. In this role, you will lead the technical design and engineering execution of complex microgrid and renewable energy projects from concept through commissioning. You will be the technical authority on your projects, working across solar PV, battery energy storage systems (BESS), generators, and integrated controls — while collaborating closely with Project Management, Procurement, Field Operations, and our clients.

This is a hands-on, high-impact role for an engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment, takes ownership, and wants to see their designs deployed in the field.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Design

  • Lead full-cycle engineering design of microgrid systems including solar PV arrays, BESS, backup generators, and hybrid controls architectures.
  • Develop and own the system single-line diagrams (SLDs), electrical schematics, equipment specifications, and design packages from 30% through IFC (Issued for Construction).
  • Size and select major equipment including inverters, charge controllers, transformers, switchgear, battery systems, and generator sets.
  • Perform load analysis, energy modeling, and system performance simulations to validate design assumptions and optimize system configurations.
  • Design and specify controls and SCADA architecture for automated microgrid management and remote monitoring.
  • Ensure all designs comply with internal company standards, contractual requirements, jurisdictional and utility requirements, and applicable codes and standards.

Project Execution

  • Serve as the primary technical lead on multiple concurrent projects from NTP through commissioning and handoff.
  • Develop and maintain engineering deliverable schedules aligned with project milestones and deployment timelines.
  • Coordinate with AHJs, utilities, and third-party engineers for permitting, interconnection, and inspections.
  • Support procurement by developing RFQs, reviewing vendor submittals, and providing technical evaluation of equipment bids.
  • Provide technical support to field crews and commissioning teams during installation and startup.
  • Review and respond to RFIs, submittals, and design change requests in a timely manner.

Technical Leadership

  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, providing technical guidance and design review.
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of BoxPower's engineering standards, templates, and design tools.
  • Participate in proposal development and design basis development for new project pursuits.
  • Identify and escalate technical risks proactively, proposing solutions before they impact schedule or cost.

  Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a closely related technical field.
  • 7+ years of engineering experience with a strong focus on solar PV, BESS, generators, and/or microgrid systems.
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical design of utility-scale or commercial/industrial solar + storage projects.
  • Strong working knowledge of battery energy storage systems (BESS) including chemistry types, BMS architecture, integration, and safety requirements.
  • Solid understanding of applicable codes and standards relevant to distributed energy systems (NECIBCIFCNFPA, UL, IEEE).
  • Experience with utility interconnection processes/standards and permitting in multiple jurisdictions.
  • Proficiency with electrical design tools (AutoCAD, PVsyst, Helioscope, ETAP, or equivalent).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills — able to present technical content to non-technical audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple opportunities in parallel.

  Preferred Qualifications

  • PE license (Professional Engineer) — active or ability to obtain.
  • Experience with remote/off-grid and islanded microgrid systems.
  • Familiarity with SCADA/HMI design and communication protocols (Modbus, DNP3, CAN bus).
  • Hands-on experience with generator systems — sizing, paralleling, automatic transfer, and hybrid integration.
  • Proficiency in microgrid controls systems and energy management software (e.g., Schneider EcoStruxure, ABB, AgetoPowerSecure, or similar).
  • Experience supporting AHJ and utility interconnection in rural or remote locations.
  • Prior work with federal or tribal energy programs (DOE, BIA, USDA, etc.).
  • Experience with containerized or modular energy system deployments.
  • PMP certification or equivalent project management experience.

Key Competencies

  • Technical problem solving under schedule pressure
  • Strong ownership mentality, accountability, and organization
  • Ability to balance design intent with real-world constructability
  • Clear written and verbal communication
  • Comfort working in fast-paced, execution-driven environments

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
