The driving force behind our success has always been the people of AspenTech. What drives us, is our aspiration, our desire and ambition to keep pushing the envelope, overcoming any hurdle, challenging the status quo to continually find a better way. You will experience these qualities of passion, pride and aspiration in many ways — from a rich set of career development programs to support of community service projects to social events that foster fun and relationship building across our global community.

The RoleWe are looking for talented, energetic, and outgoing application engineers to work in a rapidly growing field where you will have the opportunity to deliver state-of-the-art Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS) to some of the most exciting electric utilities around the world. You will be involved in designing, building, configuring, testing, and delivering these systems all while working closely with other driven Engineers and with our customers. Specifically, you’ll be working on the Outage Management System (OMS) that spans the electric utility’s operational and information technology domains; you will be building systems that improve the efficiency of the utility’s grid operations and capture information and data in support of their business functions. These systems will expand the utility’s Smart Grid capabilities by providing detailed insight into the operations of the electrical grid. You will have the opportunity to shape the future of the electrical grid, which will reduce environmental impacts through the conservation of crucial resources. You will be reporting to the Outage Management System (OMS) Manager.

  • Work closely with customers to understand their operational needs, provide system training and configuration to meet their needs.
  • Perform system and acceptance testing with customers.
  • Develop scripts and other middleware solutions to integrate into third-party systems.
  • Troubleshoot complex problems and collaborate with technical experts in various domains.
  • Lead workshops with customers.
  • Travel to customer sites and work directly with customers to successfully deliver, test, and integrate systems.
What You'll Need
  • Bachelor’s degree in applications engineering, software engineering, or computer engineering or related field.
  • 4+ years of application engineering work experience.
  • Ability to travel up to 20%.
  • Solid understanding of general computer operations including file systems, file navigation, system settings.
  • Familiarity with multiple operating systems (Windows, Linux, etc.).
  • Basic understanding of remote system access.
  • Comfortable working with configuration files and navigating servers.
  • Ability to collect and analyze data to identify software defects.
  • Ability to distinguish between configuration issues and development bugs and submit highly detailed defects to the development team.
  • Attention to detail: ability to accurately update and sync configuration across a large number of servers.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot and resolve technical issues without step-by-step guidance.
  • Ability to translate complex technical problems into clear, customer-friendly explanations.
  • Capable of identifying root causes and communicating solutions without overwhelming the customer and/or leadership with unnecessary technical detail.
  • Ability to translate customer requirements into configuration.
  • Knowledge of SQL Server, MongoDB preferred.
  • Understanding of, or experience with, an OMS or ADMS preferred.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
