THE OPPORTUNITY
Join a high-impact team leading one of the largest OpenShift Virtualization migrations in the federal space. As an OpenShift Virtualization Engineer, you'll help design, deploy, and operate a multi-tier Red Hat OpenShift environment while supporting the migration of approximately 10,000 virtual machines from VMware ESXi to OpenShift Virtualization across a large-scale, on-premises infrastructure. This role combines platform engineering, virtualization expertise, automation, and infrastructure modernization in a highly regulated environment.
HOW YOU'LL MAKE AN IMPACT
- Design, deploy, and support Red Hat OpenShift clusters across a hub-and-spoke architecture, including global hubs, site hubs, and distributed workload clusters.
- Lead large-scale migrations of Windows and RHEL virtual machines from VMware ESXi v7/v8 to OpenShift Virtualization using the Red Hat Migration Toolkit for Virtualization (MTV).
- Translate VMware networking, resource pools, folders, tags, and VM configurations into OpenShift Virtualization and Kubernetes equivalents.
- Troubleshoot migration issues, perform rollback procedures when necessary, and support migration cutovers during scheduled evening or weekend maintenance windows.
- Deploy and manage core OpenShift platform services including Dynatrace, NetApp Trident, Splunk, Commvault, and the OpenShift Compliance Operator.
- Build and maintain infrastructure automation and deployment pipelines using Ansible, Git, Quay, AutoShift, and GitOps methodologies.
- Integrate enterprise secrets management solutions such as HashiCorp Vault or CyberArk into the platform.
- Troubleshoot bare-metal infrastructure, including server hardware and out-of-band management platforms such as Cisco UCS/Intersight, Dell iDRAC, and HPE iLO.
- Participate in Agile delivery, managing work through JIRA while following formal ServiceNow change management processes.
- Maintain migration tracking and operational reporting using SharePoint Lists and support executive reporting through Power BI and other reporting tools.
- Partner with infrastructure, security, and compliance teams to ensure platform accreditation and regulatory compliance.
- Create technical documentation, migration runbooks, architecture diagrams, and operational procedures while providing technical leadership and mentoring across the team.
SKILLS THAT DRIVE SUCCESS

- Experience with enterprise secrets management platforms including HashiCorp Vault, CyberArk, or similar solutions.
- Experience administering or supporting bare-metal server platforms and hardware management tools.
- Experience working within Agile methodologies using JIRA, ServiceNow, SharePoint, and reporting tools such as Power BI.
- Ability to analyze large datasets to monitor migration progress, identify risks, and communicate project status.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across engineering, security, infrastructure, and customer teams.
WHAT SETS YOU APART
- Experience with OpenShift Virtualization (KubeVirt) in production environments.
- Red Hat Certified Specialist in OpenShift Virtualization or equivalent experience.
- VMware VCP-DCV certification.
