Point provides scholars with financial support, leadership and career development, and a lifelong community of students, alumni, and leaders in every field and industry.

We pursue excellence in all we do and are building for scale - growing the number of scholars we serve, expanding leadership and career development opportunities, and innovating on the systems and technology that let a nimble team reach further every year.

Position Overview

Point Foundation seeks a visionary, innovative, and experienced Sr. Director, Technology & Systems to build the technology foundation that will carry Point into its next chapter of growth. This is a rare opportunity to own technology end-to-end at a prominent national organization. The Sr. Director will set the multi-year roadmap, serve as Point's internal authority on technology investment, and act as a trusted advisor and technical coach to leaders across Point’s Program and Development departments as they seek out the right technology to accelerate and streamline their work. This is also a chance to lead on AI: deciding where it genuinely creates capacity for a nimble team and bringing staff along, so new tools are actually adopted. For a leader who wants scope, real influence with the executive team, and a mission worth building for, this role offers all three.

Reports to: Chief Operating Officer - Kevin Wright

Status: Full-time, exempt

Supervises: Technology & Systems direct report(s); retained IT and technology vendors and consultants

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Technology Strategy & Roadmap:

  • Own Point's technology roadmap and strategy, developing a multi-year plan that translates organizational growth goals into a coherent systems and infrastructure strategy.
  • Serve as the internal authority on major technology decisions, investments, and implementations, bringing clear recommendations and trade-offs to the COO.
  • Evaluate the current tech stack end-to-end and sequence investments to systems scale with the organization rather than accumulating one at a time.
  • Manage the technology budget, allocating resources across vendors, licenses, staff, and projects with fiscal accountability.
  • Establish and maintain organization-wide standards for how technology is evaluated, procured, and implemented.
  • Report on technology performance, risk, and roadmap progress to senior leadership and the Board as needed.

Organizational Technology Strategy & Advisory:

  • Advise Program Operations and Development Operations on data governance, CRM strategy, and cybersecurity, partnering with those directors to identify and implement the right tools for their needs.
  • Establish organization-wide data standards, ensuring clean, consistent, and well-governed data across Program, Development, and Finance systems.
  • Set cybersecurity policy and hold departments and vendors accountable to it, including training, access management, and incident response.

IT Vendor Management & Infrastructure:

  • Own the relationship with Point's retained IT vendor(s) and additional technology vendors, setting KPIs and holding them accountable for support, security, and value delivered.
  • Lead RFP, selection, and contract negotiation processes for technology vendors, consultants, and platforms.
  • Oversee day-to-day IT infrastructure and support - cloud collaboration environments, hardware, access, and business continuity - so a nimble staff is well supported.
  • Continually evaluate the balance between in-house capability and external vendor support as the organization grows.

AI Adoption, Change Management & Team Leadership:

  • Lead AI integration across the organization, identifying where AI tools can meaningfully improve efficiency - and where they should not be used.
  • Lead the training and change management needed for staff to adopt AI tools effectively and responsibly, including usage policy and risk guardrails.
  • Lead organizational change management for new systems and processes, ensuring tools and workflows are genuinely adopted across departments, not just implemented.
  • Lead, coach, and develop direct report(s), building internal capacity so technology knowledge is not concentrated in a single person.
  • Translate technical decisions into terms non-technical department leaders can act on and rally around.

Requirements

  • 8-10+ years in technology or systems leadership, including at least 3-5 years at a senior or director level owning technology strategy at a nonprofit or an organization going through significant growth or scaling.
  • Demonstrated project management experience, running multi-stakeholder initiatives with competing timelines through to completion.
  • Vendor and contract management experience, including running RFP processes for technology consultants and vendors.
  • Experience with CRM platforms (Salesforce, Blackbaud, or equivalent) and cloud collaboration environments such as Microsoft 365.
  • Hands-on experience evaluating and deploying AI tools in an organizational setting, including adoption, training, and risk.
  • Proven ability to lead technology strategy cross-functionally, translating technical decisions into terms non-technical department leaders can act on and rally around.
  • Working knowledge of data governance and cybersecurity policy, standards, and practice.
  • Cross-functional leadership: able to manage up, down, and across a complex organization, and to manage internal staff and external vendors alike.
  • Intellectual curiosity and drive to stay current on best-in-class technology and systems practices.
  • Strong executive presence and verbal communication, including presenting to senior leadership and the Board.
  • Highly organized and deadline-driven, managing multiple high-priority projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Discretion and sound judgment in handling sensitive organizational and constituent data.
  • Passionate about Point's mission and enthusiasm about communicating the organization's philosophy, mission, and values.
  • Commitment to advancing equity and inclusion in all areas of responsibility and across the organization.
  • Preferred: experience with Claude or comparable AI platforms; experience managing and deploying enterprise-level software across an organization; and a security certification (such as CISSP) or project management certification (PMP).

Core Competencies - Our Ways of Working

  • Ownership - sets ambitious goals, delivers against them and raises problems early.
  • Learn & Adapt - commits to improvement through reflection and two-way feedback.
  • Focus & Excellence - prioritizes deliberately so urgent and routine work both land.
  • Trust & Belonging - cultivates positive working relationships tact and diplomacy.
  • Collaborate for Scale & Growth - builds strong teams through guidance and coaching.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
