Maxar Space Systems is seeking a Sr. Director of Flight Software and Dynamic Control Analysis (DCA) to join our leadership team in Palo Alto, or San Jose, CA.
In this role, you will lead a team and drive spacecraft flight software architecture development across the full range of Maxar Space products. More and more of our space-based products/programs are digitally and software enabled. Due to that, we are looking for a leader to challenge conventional approaches and lay the foundation for next-generation software capabilities and new product concepts, one which is focused on cutting-edge, cost-competitive Space products. This leader will drive excellence in software development and delivery, and establish and lead a center of excellence for software within Maxar Space Systems.
You will play an essential role in setting standards for software development, leading/overseeing flight software architecture development, and driving implementation to program needs across development programs. You will be responsible for developing team members and advancing creative solutions which integrate customer inputs and technical requirements to build and deliver to program defined schedule requirements, with an emphasis on designing-in sufficient flexibility and scalability to envelop a range of customer needs.
Responsibilities:
  • Leading a team of talented flight software and Dynamic Control Analysis (DCA) engineers in the development, integration, test, and delivery of modular software architecture running on a range of hardware controlling all spacecraft functions
  • Influencing the shaping of future products by establishing the framework used across multiple products or systems
  • Planning, training, reporting, evaluation and resource management for our Maxar 300 proliferated LEO product line Flight Software and DCA activities through leadership of a high-performing team supporting product development, programs, IRAD, new business pursuits and other functions requiring applicable support
  • Instilling a culture of active collaboration, empowerment, adherence to delivery schedule requirements and personal accountability across the Flight Software and DCA team through individual development plans incorporating training and rotations to maximize talent breadth
  • Collaborating with senior leaders, engineers, supply chain and others in accordance with industry standards to deliver the highest quality product
  • Developing and maintaining control systems to confirm and meet compliance with regards to quality and reliability
  • Measure and improve quality of Flight Software organization output and deliverables to meet/exceed program commitments, including schedule, through careful planning and team execution
  • Drive organizational performance improvement while controlling cost and identifying gaps or risks
  • Recommend process improvements or cost reduction opportunities
  • Recommend technology development opportunities in line with future business forecasts
  • Provide recommendations to avoid cost and schedule impacts of unforeseen issues or minimize those impacts if they arise
  • Provide executive-level briefings to management that clearly provide overall status, schedule progress, summary of any issues and action plans to resolve, and financial adherence to budgets

Minimum Requirements:
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and be willing and able to obtain U.S. government Secret or higher security clearance
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or another engineering or STEM discipline.
  • 15 years engineering experience including 5 years as a manager or in a lead role with demonstrated capabilities in project management
  • Previous experience in software development and/or management, aerospace guidance & control analysis, management systems, and software financial accountability

Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in software development and production, dynamics and control analysis and design, development of attitude feedback control modes, GNC functions/algorithms
  • Active U.S. government security clearance
  • Recent relevant experience operating in SAFe, Scaled Agile Framework
  • Worked on satellite software development from inception to launch
  • Experience with large-scale satellite software development projects
  • Experience with CMMI-3

In support of pay transparency at Maxar, we disclose salary ranges on all U.S. job postings. The successful candidate's starting pay will fall within the salary range provided below and is determined based on job-related factors, including, but not limited to, the experience, qualifications, knowledge, skills, geographic work location, and market conditions. Candidates with the minimum necessary experience, qualifications, knowledge, and skillsets for the position should not expect to receive the upper end of the pay range.
• The base pay for this position within California is: $212,000.00 - $352,000.00 annually.
For all other states, we use geographic cost of labor as an input to develop market-driven ranges for our roles, and as such, each location where we hire may have a different range.

Additionally, this position is incentive eligible with a target based on contribution, company performance, and/or individual results achieved; the specific incentive plan and target amount will be determined based on the role and breadth of contributions.
