About the Role:

Motive is looking for a Sr. Cloud Security Engineer to join our Security Engineering team. You will design and implement secure cloud architectures, build automations, and deploy AWS-native controls to protect our platform at scale. You will work hands-on in AWS, writing code, building guardrails, improving identity architecture, and creating secure patterns for infrastructure teams.

This is a highly technical role for engineers who want to build, not just review—engineers who enjoy designing systems, automating everything, and raising the security bar through engineering excellence.

What you’ll do:
  • Architect and implement secure AWS infrastructure patterns (IAM, VPC, KMS, EKS, Lambda, ECS/Fargate, S3, CloudTrail, etc.)
  • Write high-quality code (Python, Go preferred) to build automations, tooling, and internal security services
  • Build cloud guardrails, AWS Config rules, SCPs, and automated remediation workflows
  • Design and implement "secure defaults" and paved roads for engineering teams
  • Partner with Infra, SRE, and Application teams to design secure systems and APIs
  • Improve least privilege across human and non-human identities through automation
  • Build event-driven detections using CloudTrail, EventBridge, Lambda, and Step Functions
  • Threat model new services and provide actionable architecture guidance
  • Own key domains such as secrets management, container security, and network segmentation
  • Drive measurable security outcomes with data and code
  • Contribute to documentation, playbooks, and reusable patterns
What we’re looking for:
  • Strong cloud security fundamentals (identity, networks, encryption, isolation, boundary design)
  • Deep hands-on experience with AWS security services: IAM, KMS, S3, CloudTrail, GuardDuty, Config, Security Hub, VPC, WAF
  • Ability to design, write, and maintain automations using Python or Go
  • Experience architecting multi-component distributed systems in AWS
  • Ability to design solutions end-to-end and break them into executable pieces
  • Strong debugging, root cause analysis, and system thinking abilities
  • Experience with threat modeling and risk analysis in cloud workloads
  • Proven ability to collaborate cross-functionally with Infra/SRE/Product teams
  • Ability to self-manage and drive projects from design to deployment
  • Strong communication habits and an ability to explain complex tradeoffs cleanly
Bonus skills:
  • Experience with Kubernetes/EKS, ArgoCD, Terraform, or CloudFormation
  • Experience with IoT or edge device security
  • Experience with multi-account AWS Org design
  • Experience with CI/CD security and software supply chain controls
  • Experience building identity automation or least privilege workflows

Creating a diverse and inclusive workplace is one of Motive's core values. We are an equal opportunity employer and welcome people of different backgrounds, experiences, abilities and perspectives.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
