It’s a big ask, but it’s one that we have the power to deliver when we work together. We collaborate and innovate – pushing one another to transform not just Pacific Life, but the entire industry for the better. Why? Because it’s the right thing to do. Pacific Life is more than a job, it’s a career with purpose. It’s a career where you have the support, balance, and resources to make a positive impact on the future – including your own.

We’re actively seeking a talented Sr. Cloud Engineer Consultant to join our dynamic cloud platform team in Charlotte, North Carolina, or Newport Beach, CA.

As a Sr. Cloud Engineer Consultant, you'll move Pacific Life, and your career, forward by serving as a trusted advisor and technical leader, guiding cloud and network teams through the complexities of hybrid and multi-cloud environments. Your expertise will be critical in architecting, implementing, and optimizing global cloud infrastructure and networking solutions to achieve peak performance, robust security, and cost-effective outcomes.

You will be part of a highly skilled team, integral to the design and implementation of core cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, cloud governance platforms, and automation tooling. You will also provide expert consultation and guidance, helping build a world-class suite of cloud-enabled capabilities and driving innovation in cloud networking.

How you'll help move us forward:

Consultation & Strategic Advisory

  • Act as the primary Subject Matter Expert (SME) for cloud engineering and cloud networking across multiple major Cloud Service Providers, as well as hybrid connectivity solutions.

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of on-premises and cloud network infrastructures to identify vulnerabilities, inefficiencies, and opportunities for enhancement.

  • Develop tailored cloud and networking strategies, detailed roadmaps, and technical designs that align with business goals, security mandates, and financial parameters.

  • Provide expert consultation and guidance to key areas, contributing to the development of functional strategy and process improvements.

Design & Architect

  • Design and implement resilient, scalable, and secure cloud and network architectures spanning multi-cloud and hybrid environments (e.g., AWS Cloud WAN, AWS Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, Azure ExpressRoute, VPNs).

  • Architect and deploy advanced security solutions, including cloud firewalls (Imperva WAF, NWFW), network segmentation (VPC/VNet peering, micro-segmentation), and DDoS mitigation techniques.

  • Ensure all designs comply with industry’s best practices, regulatory standards (SOC 2, HIPAA, PCI), and organizational policies.

  • Collaborate with infrastructure, risk management, application, and support teams to review design and test plans, determine potential gaps, and develop alternative solutions.

Implementation & Automation

  • Deliver software programs, scripts, configuration files, and other programming artifacts using tools such as AWS, Azure, Terraform, Ansible, and Azure DevOps Pipelines.

  • Lead and deliver complex cloud network migration and modernization initiatives from planning through execution.

  • Utilize Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools (Terraform preferred) to automate deployment and management of cloud and network resources.

  • Enhance system and network performance via traffic engineering, load balancing, and Application Delivery Controller (ADC) configurations.

  • Monitor system and network performance, recommend and automate corrective actions, and ensure end-to-end availability and performance of mission-critical services.

Mentorship & Documentation

  • Produce comprehensive documentation, including network diagrams, design specifications, operational runbooks, and client-facing presentations.

  • Communicate complex details in a way that is understandable to both technical and non-technical audiences, collaborating with stakeholders at all levels.

  • Mentor and develop less experienced engineers, promoting knowledge sharing and technical excellence within the team.

The experience you bring:

  • 8+ years of experience in cloud, infrastructure, or network engineering roles, with at least 5 years specializing in public cloud networking and hybrid connectivity.

  • Hands-on experience with networking services in at least two of the four major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, OCI, GCP); multi-cloud proficiency highly preferred.

  • MS in Computer Science and/or Engineering, or equivalent experience and certifications.

  • Experience working as part of a Scrum or Agile team.

  • Strong background in the following areas: compute & storage, network, security, software development, data analytics.

  • Mastery of core networking (TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, VPNs, firewalls, IDS/IPS) and cloud networking (AWS: VPCs, Cloud WAN, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect; Azure: VNets, ExpressRoute, Virtual WAN; OCI: VCN Networks, Dynamic Routing Gateway).

  • Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred), scripting (Python, PowerShell, Bash), and configuration management platforms (e.g., Ansible, Tanium, etc.).

  • Effective communicator with experience presenting to both technical and executive audiences.

What makes you stand out:

  • Experience writing Terraform modules.

  • MS in Computer Science and/or Engineering.

  • Professional-level cloud certifications (e.g., AWS Solutions Architect Professional, AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty, Azure Network Engineer Associate).

  • Cisco CCIE or CCNP certification.

  • Experience with micro-segmentation technologies

  • Experience with python, bash, HLC, and PowerShell as well as the command-line interface that support all major CSPs

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
