About KLDiscovery

KLDiscovery is a global eDiscovery and legal technology provider serving large law firms, corporate legal departments, and government agencies. We build and operate the products and services that legal teams rely on to manage, process, and review case data at scale. With operations across multiple countries and a client base that includes AmLaw 200 firms, we handle some of the largest and most complex matters in the industry.

About the Role

Our Business Intelligence team runs the data pipeline behind the company's monthly billing operation — moving tens of thousands of billing line items each cycle from SQL Server into our financial system of record, validating them along the way, and giving our operations and finance teams the tools they need to review and finalize invoices.

We're modernizing that pipeline: making nightly processing faster, catching data-quality issues at the source instead of at month-end, automating repetitive decisions, and moving from a monthly batch model toward continuous, largely automated billing. It's a high-impact environment where the code you write directly affects how quickly and accurately the business gets paid.

We're looking for a versatile senior BI Developer who is strong in SQL Server, SSIS, Python, and R and enjoys owning a feature end to end — from the database, through the data pipeline, to the tools our internal users rely on.

What You'll Do

  • Build and tune the data pipeline. Develop and optimize SQL Server stored procedures and SSIS packages that assemble the monthly billing dataset and deliver it to our financial system. Profile slow processes and fix root causes (execution plans, indexing, set-based rewrites).
  • Automate with Python. Build and maintain Python services and scheduled jobs that move, transform, and validate data between SQL Server and downstream systems — including REST API integrations with our ERP.
  • Guard data quality. Design validation and edit-check frameworks (required-field, range, referential-integrity, and duplicate checks) that quarantine bad data at ingestion, before it reaches a customer invoice.
  • Analyze and model. Use R and Python for data analysis, anomaly detection, and models that assist billing decisions (e.g., mapping recommendations and eligibility scoring).
  • Support internal applications. Enhance the internal reporting and data-quality tooling that billing and operations teams use day to day. (We'll help you ramp on this if it's new to you.)
  • Work to a standard. Follow team coding standards, write maintainable and well-documented code, participate in code reviews, and test changes against production-like data before release.
  • Partner across teams. Collaborate with operations, finance, and analyst stakeholders to turn process pain points into reliable, auditable automation.

What We're Looking For (Required)

  • 6+ years of professional experience as a BI Developer, Data Developer, Data Engineer, or similar.
  • SQL Server / T-SQL — strong. Complex queries, stored procedures, and hands-on performance tuning (reading execution plans, indexing strategy, writing SARGable / set-based logic).
  • SSIS. Practical experience building, deploying, and scheduling ETL packages.
  • Python for data work and automation (e.g., pandas, database connectivity such as pyodbc; comfort calling and building REST APIs).
  • R for data analysis and statistical work.
  • Solid grasp of relational data modeling and data-quality principles.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, and the ability to work directly with non-technical stakeholders in finance and operations.
  • Able to work independently in a remote (US business hours) team and manage your own delivery.

Nice to Have (Pluses)

  • Azure DevOps / CI-CD for database projects (SSDT/DACPAC) — a strong plus.
  • REST API design and integration, especially with ERP or financial systems (Oracle a plus).
  • Reporting experience (SSRS, Power BI, or similar).
  • Machine-learning exposure (e.g., scikit-learn) for classification/recommendation problems.
  • Awareness of SOX / ITGC or other financial-controls and audit requirements.
  • Background in finance, billing, revenue, or ERP domains.

Why This Role

  • Direct business impact — you're building the system that bills tens of millions of dollars a month, not a side project.
  • Full-stack BI — real breadth across database, data pipeline, automation, analytics, and internal apps rather than a single narrow lane.
  • Modernization mandate — active roadmap to automate and re-architect a legacy process, with room to shape the design.
  • Remote-first, collaborative team that values clean, well-tested, auditable work.

We offer competitive total compensation that includes base pay, bonus potential, inclusive benefits, wellness programs, and perks. We use market and industry data to inform pay decisions while considering geography and labor markets, individual experience, and business needs. Individual compensation will vary, although a reasonable estimate of the current annualized base pay range for this position is $100,000 to $125,000.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
