The Role

We’re looking for a Sr. Back End Engineer to join our team and help design, build, and scale the backend systems that power our products. You’ll work on high-throughput services, collaborate closely with cross-functional partners, and play a key role in shaping the technical direction of our backend platform. This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy solving complex technical challenges, mentoring others, and building reliable, scalable systems that have a real impact.

You’ll be part of an agile engineering team, collaborating with product, design, and other engineers across the organization. Our backend stack primarily uses Go, and we value clean architecture, automation, and continuous learning.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable and reliable backend services using Go or other backend languages.
  • Collaborate with product, design, and marketing teams to understand user and business needs and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Support the Marketing department by contributing to the infrastructure and features behind our websites and digital campaigns.
  • Build integrations with external systems and APIs, ensuring resilience, observability, and performance.
  • Improve system reliability and operational efficiency through automation, monitoring, and proactive maintenance.
  • Lead and contribute to architecture and technical design discussions.
  • Ensure code quality and best practices through code reviews, testing, and documentation.
  • Mentor and support mid-level engineers, helping them grow in technical skills and ownership.
  • Drive modernization initiatives and contribute to shaping our backend technical roadmap.

Who You Are

  • You have extensive experience in back‑end engineering and designing and scaling distributed systems in production.
  • You have expert-level proficiency in Golang (or similar languages like Python, C# or Node.js), with a strong track record of shipping high-throughput APIs and writing understandable, testable, and efficient code.
  • You deeply understand modern cloud-native environments and infrastructure at scale (e.g. containers, CI/CD, observability, distributed systems).
  • You have experience working closely with cross-functional stakeholders, including non-technical teams such as Marketing, to help them achieve business outcomes.
  • You are curious about the potential of AI and have hands-on experience exploring or integrating AI-powered tools or workflows to improve product quality, automation, or developer productivity.
  • You are comfortable collaborating in an agile, experiment‑driven environment and communicating clearly with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • You are passionate in writing clean, observable, and well‑tested code; strong advocate for continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.
  • You take initiative to solve problems, propose improvements, and remove team blockers.
  • You’re curious about new technologies and continuously seek ways to improve systems and developer workflows.
  • You have experience with and are a proponent of automated testing.
  • You have experience using a flavor of version control — we use git and Github to collaborate and manage pull requests.

Bonus Points (Optional)

  • Experience supporting marketing websites, A/B testing infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with web performance optimization and SEO best practices.
  • Experience with data pipelines or analytics infrastructure (e.g. BigQuery, Looker).
  • Exposure to AI/ML tooling or developer productivity tools.
  • Proven experience in system modernization and large-scale system enhancements.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
