Summary:
We are seeking a versatile and proactive Sports Reporter to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for covering local high school and college sports, including Cal Poly Humboldt and College of the Redwoods, as well as general local news. This role requires a passion for storytelling, a commitment to accuracy, and the ability to build strong relationships within the community. The reporter must be adaptable, comfortable working with a small team, and ready to jump between sports and news coverage as needed.
What you will do:
Reporting at least two byline stories per day on a variety of sports and news topics
Cover local events, from high school and college games to city council meetings, conducting on-site interviews with coaches, athletes, and community leaders
Produce a mix of content, including game recaps, player and coach profiles, and event previews
Work cooperatively with our small team of journalists and attend a weekly sports staff meeting to coordinate coverage
What you will bring:
Journalism experience and a strong working knowledge of AP style
Good people skills for conducting interviews and building relationships with a variety of sources
The ability to quickly compile accurate reporting on a variety of topics, with strong spelling and grammar skills required
Experience working with various technologies for the position, including PC laptops, digital cameras, and recording equipment
A local connection to or strong knowledge of the California Humboldt and Redlands areas is preferred
Bachelor's degree preferred; experience in a professional journalism newsroom preferred
Benefits and Compensation:
The hourly wage range is $17.00 - $17.25 + $50.00 per month cell phone stipend and mileage reimbursement. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility).
