As a Spacecraft Engineer Intern (Mechanical), you will design mechanical sub-assemblies, participate in fabrication and assembly, and support integration tasks for spacecraft projects.
The summary above was generated by AI

Oligo is building a manufacturing-in-the-loop foundation model to automate spacecraft design and production worldwide. Our approach allows customers to focus entirely on their own technology and mission objectives, while we handle everything, from design and manufacturing to launch and operations. Leveraging cutting edge AI-driven generative design and automated manufacturing, our ex-MIT, Harvard, and NASA JPL team work to create the most advanced payload-specific spacecraft at scale in weeks over months.
With world‑class advisors on our board, and fresh funding from top investors like Lux Capital, we’re always on the lookout for exceptional builders, fast learners, and ambitious engineers. Whether your passion lies in spacecraft systems, avionics, ML/AI, or advanced manufacturing, you’ll be collaborating across disciplines on real missions that fly, perform in orbit, and scale internationally.
We pair world-class AI/ML talent with top-tier satellite engineers under one roof to reimagine how space systems are built, starting from first principles. No bureaucracy. No legacy thinking.
If you think you’re a fit, we are extremely excited to meet you.

Spacecraft Engineer Intern (Mechanical)

As a Spacecraft Engineer Intern (Mechanical), you’ll own deliverables for our spacecraft design and test. You’ll bridge mechanical and electrical disciplines, drive systems-level decisions, and physically build what you design.

This role is for the student who spends more time in the machine shop than the library, someone who thrives when creativity meets accountability and isn't afraid to get their hands dirty to solve a complex problem.

What You'll Do

As a Spacecraft Engineer Intern (Mechanical), you'll own specific mechanical sub-assemblies and support the integration of the spacecraft. You’ll be mentored by senior engineers but expected to drive your projects forward independently. Your responsibilities will include:

Mechanical & Structural Design

  • Own sub-system designs: Assist in the design of primary structures, mechanisms, enclosures, and mounts.

  • CAD & Documentation: Create detailed 3D models and drawings using GD&T to ensure parts can actually be manufactured.

  • Requirement Tracking: Help maintain Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and system-level requirements.

Fabrication & Machining

  • Hands-on Prototyping: Fabricate and assemble spacecraft hardware, utilizing in-house manual and CNC equipment (mills, lathes).

  • Build & Test: Participate in environmental qualification campaigns, including TVAC, vibration, and shock testing.

  • Collaborate with internal and external machinists, fabricators, and vendors to ensure high-quality production within spec.

  • DFM: Work closely with the shop to improve Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and assembly workflows.

Systems & Integration

  • Cross-Disciplinary: Work with Avionics and Generative Design teams to ensure seamless mechanical-electrical integration (cable routing, thermal paths, etc.).

  • Assist in cable routing, power distribution layouts, and connector/interface design.

  • Work hands-on during spacecraft assembly and environmental qualification.

  • Lead or support reviews (PDR, CDR, TRR) and produce high-quality engineering documentation.

What You'll BringMinimum Qualifications
  • Current Student: Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.

  • Project Experience: Demonstrated hands-on experience through high-intensity projects (e.g., Formula SAE, Rocketry Club, or previous internships).

  • CAD Proficiency: Strong skills in SolidWorks, NX, or CATIA.

  • Toolbox Skills: Experience with manual or CNC machining and basic shop safety.

  • Experience with software configuration management tools (e.g., Git, GitLab, Jira) and agile development methodologies.

  • Fundamentals: A solid understanding of material properties, fastener selection, and tolerance stack-ups.

  • Communication: Ability to explain a complex technical trade-off clearly and concisely.

  • Physical: Ability to lift/carry up to 40 lbs and work around flight hardware.

Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Analysis: Basic experience with FEA/Thermal analysis (Ansys, Thermal Desktop, or Simcenter).

  • Harnessing: Experience with 3D wire routing or cable assembly.

  • Fast-Paced Environments: Experience working in startups or "move fast" environments where requirements can shift.

  • Software: Familiarity with Git, Jira, or similar project management tools.

  • Willingness to work extended hours or weekends when necessary to meet mission-critical deadlines.

Pay Range
  • Salary range: $100,000 - $120,000 / per year.

  • This role is on-site in Hawthorne, CA

Benefits
  • Unlimited PTO

  • Catering provided on-site everyday.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
