About Us

Harmattan AI is a next-generation defense prime building autonomous and scalable defense systems. Following the close of a $200M Series B, valuing the company at $1.4 billion, we are expanding our teams and capabilities to deliver mission-critical systems to allied forces.

Our work is guided by clear values: building technologies with real-world impact, pursuing excellence in everything we do, setting ambitious goals, and taking on the hardest technical challenges. We operate in a demanding environment where rigor, ownership, and execution are expected.

About the Role

We are looking for a Software Tooling Engineer to design and build the internal tools that enable our operations to move faster and scale effectively. You will work on our internal data infrastructure and operational workflows, developing high-impact tools that support teams across the company.
This is a versatile role combining strong software engineering expertise with a deep understanding of user needs. As a member of the Tooling module, you will be responsible for the architecture, development, and deployment of tools that become essential to Harmattan's core operational workflows: AI-powered internal agents, workflow automation, internal data visualisation tools, wrappers, integrations, and lightweight backend services.

Responsibilities
Internal Tooling & Automation

  • Design and develop internal tools and AI/LLM-based agents used across teams.

  • Build dashboards, visualisation tools, and workflow automations that accelerate day-to-day operations at Harmattan AI.

Operational Process Optimisation

  • Streamline key operational processes through tailored tools, connectors, and integrations with internal systems.

  • Work closely with teams to identify bottlenecks, iterate quickly, and deliver high-leverage solutions.

Backend & Infrastructure

  • Design and maintain lightweight backend services powering internal tools (APIs, data storage, metrics, logging).

  • Contribute to cloud deployment and integration with CI/CD pipelines and data flows.

Quality & Reliability

  • Establish standards for code quality, testing, observability, and documentation.

  • Ensure internal tools are robust, monitored, and evolve in line with operational needs.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Master's (MSc) or Bachelor's (BSc) degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.

  • Strong software engineering experience with Python.

  • Hands-on experience developing internal tools, workflow automations, or AI/LLM-based utilities.

  • Working knowledge of cloud platforms (GCP or AWS).

  • Solid understanding of CI/CD practices and internal software delivery processes.

Communication & influence

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

  • Ability to engage with a wide range of profiles, from junior contributors to senior executives.

  • Comfortable collaborating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Commitment

  • Full commitment to Harmattan AI's mission, vision, and growth ambitions.

  • Willingness to go the extra mile when needed to ensure operational excellence.

We look forward to hearing how you can help shape the future of autonomous defense systems at Harmattan AI.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
