About Panoptyc

At Panoptyc, we're on a mission to revolutionize loss prevention. Using visual AI and manual reviewers, we help retailers detect theft in over 15,000 markets across the United States. From Fortune 500 giants to local businesses, our impact is far-reaching. As a fully remote, rapidly growing team, we're excited to invite top talent worldwide to join us in reshaping the future of retail security.

About the Role

As an R&D Software Engineer at Panoptyc, you'll thrive on experimentation and rapid iteration, building cutting-edge backend/edge systems, APIs, and ML/AI solutions. You'll be responsible for:

  • Researching and developing new systems and product prototypes

  • Building and testing proof-of-concepts that may evolve into production systems

  • Designing and implementing APIs and services using Python, Node.js/TypeScript

  • Working with computer vision systems and AI/ML technologies

  • Collaborating with a small, tight-knit R&D team to turn ideas into functional solutions

  • Writing comprehensive tests and documentation for your code

  • Iterating quickly based on feedback and results

This role bridges technical implementation and strategic vision, requiring you to not only write excellent code but also understand the "why" behind our products.

Requirements

  • 2-3+ years of experience as a Software Engineer

  • Strong proficiency in the following: Python, TypeScript/Node.js. We're framework agnostic.

  • Experience with Linux environments and shell scripting

  • Working knowledge of PostgreSQL or similar relational databases

  • Familiarity with containerization (Docker) and cloud-based deployments

  • Experience with RESTful API design and implementation

  • Basic understanding of computer vision concepts and ML/AI frameworks is a plus

  • Experience with Git and modern CI/CD pipelines

  • Ability to write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code

  • Low ego – if you don't know the answer, you ask questions. You aren't afraid of anybody knowing what you don't know.

  • Honest – even when the truth isn't great, you speak it. If you had an off day, or your manager is wrong, you say so.

  • Able to have at least 5 working hours overlapping US Eastern Standard Time.

We're looking for a self-starter who thrives in ambiguous situations and can learn new technologies independently. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong problem-solving abilities, pays close attention to detail, and communicates honestly and directly. You should have a low ego—comfortable asking questions when needed—and maintain curiosity about emerging tech trends.
As part of our remote team, you'll need excellent written and verbal English skills and the ability to overlap at least 5 working hours with US Eastern Standard Time.

Why Join Panoptyc?

  • Competitive compensation package from $20-$30 USD/hr

  • Clear path for professional advancement in a rapidly growing technology company

  • Remote-first culture that values work-life balance and flexibility

  • Regular opportunities for skills development and technical certifications

  • Work with cutting-edge AI technology solving meaningful real-world problems

  • Be part of building a global engineering center of excellence

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
