Availity is seeking a Software Engineer III to join our Essentials Backbone team.  This team owns configuration tools and our single-sign-on systems.  These systems power our customer's abilities to integrate with and extend our portal.

 

This role is ideal for an assertive, highly capable engineer who values well-architected systems, excellent engineering practices and continuous improvement. You will play a key role in designing, building, and operating scalable, resilient services that drive connectivity while helping the team move to leaner, faster, cleaner, and more cost-efficient in the cloud.

 

Our customers include internal implementation teams as well as external payer and provider customers. and our success is measured by platform reliability, performance, clarity of system health and ease of consumption.  We engage with AI development tools and expect the ideal candidate to effectively leverage those tools in their development workflow to speed excellent implementation.

Role qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field or equivalent experience

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience

  • Strong, hands-on experience with NodeJS and React, with:

    • Demonstrated ability and willingness to ramp quickly into the other

  • Solid understanding of:

    • Microservices architecture

    • RESTful APIs

    • Distributed systems concepts

  • Experience building and running applications in the cloud (AWS preferred)

  • Working knowledge of:

    • CI/CD pipelines

    • Automated testing strategies

    • Source control and trunk-based development

  • Proven ability to:

    • Take ownership of complex systems

    • Make sound technical decisions

    • Balance speed, quality, and long-term maintainability

Preferred qualifications (nice-to-have):

  • Experience working with Java in production environments

  • Familiarity with:

    • Docker and containerized workloads

    • Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform)

    • Kubernetes / managed container platforms

  • Strong experience with:

    • Logging, metrics, and distributed tracing

    • Designing for observability and system health awareness

  • Prior experience supporting internal platform or shared services teams

  • Healthcare or regulated industry experience

What you will be doing:

  • Design, build, and maintain backend services and shared libraries in NodeJS and React frontends written in both Javascript and Typescript

  • Contribute to the evolution of a microservices-based platform with a strong emphasis on:

    • Scalability

    • Resilience and fault tolerance

    • Observability and operational excellence

  • Own services end-to-end, including:

    • Development

    • Testing

    • Deployment

    • Monitoring and support

  • Partner closely with an engaged Product Owner to deliver value through:

    • Scrum-based sprint planning

    • Weekly minor releases and monthly major releases

  • Raise the engineering bar by:

    • Writing clean, maintainable, well-tested code

    • Advocating for strong software engineering principles

    • Continuously refining processes, tooling, and standards

  • Improve system performance, reliability, and cloud cost efficiency

  • Actively participate in architecture discussions, technical design reviews, and solution trade-off decisions

  • Mentor and collaborate with teammates in a small, high-trust team of 4 engineers
