Over the last 10+ years, Ellevation Education has built a thriving business serving the administrators, specialists, and teachers who support English Learners (ELL) at public schools across the US. Today, over 1,800 school districts use our software to manage their EL programs and drive key outcomes for students. We are a successful, rapidly growing business with a real mission—helping ELLs achieve their highest aspirations. We are making a series of investments in the development of a benchmark assessment aimed at informing instruction for EL students in grades 2–12 across the country. This lightweight assessment will serve as a lower-stakes vehicle to measure students’ growth between the high-stakes, federally mandated summative assessments.

As a software engineer II on our assessment team, you’ll work in our instructional product domain to help build out the assessment solution, including both greenfield work and deep integrations with our existing systems. You should be comfortable working across the full stack with our back end (Python, Postgres, ECS) and our front end (React).

We look for engineers who are excited to use their technical skills and experience in support of a mission-driven company. We work in small, product-centric teams empowered to make a difference in a particular product or aspect of a product. Our teams are remote and highly collaborative. To accomplish this we set core hours of 10AM - 4PM (Eastern) and expect to meet in person about 4 times per year (whether at our Boston Headquarters or at one of our semi-annual company offsites).

We are looking for someone who is comfortable weighing tradeoffs between quality and expediency to technical problems. You have a deep understanding of business value and are able to take ownership over medium sized features and communicate milestones to your product peers. You should be comfortable working across the stack, going deep as necessary.

About you:

  • You have 2-4 years of software development experience,
  • You have experience in at least one modern language, e.g., Python, Go, C# etc.
  • You have experience with React and/or TypeScript and related UI frameworks.
  • You have demonstrated success working in and promoting a rapidly changing, collaborative, and iterative product development environment.
  • You have the versatility to learn new technologies and contribute across different parts of the tech stack.
  • You’re naturally curious and a great team player. You have strong interpersonal skills and can work with teammates of varying levels of experience and stakeholders across multiple domains.
  • You have a passion for building great products through technology.

Impact:

  • 1 month - Contribute to new feature development across our stack of Postgres, Python, and React/Typescript, participate in team processes, build business context in a new domain
  • 3 months - Own development of small features, lead technical discussions and evaluate tradeoffs, be an advocate for best practices and improving team processes
  • 6 months - Own development of small to medium sized features, collaborate cross-functionally to navigate ambiguous product spaces, identify and help to resolve pain points in workflows
  • 12 months - Own development of medium to large sized features, help to scope and prioritize technical investments, work directly with product, design, and education solutions to ensure expedient delivery of key features

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
