Software Engineer, Generalist

XDOF | Full-Time | San Mateo, CA

At XDOF, we’re at an inflection point. Frontier labs are racing to build general-purpose robots, and high-quality training data is the bottleneck. We’re building the foundation behind the foundation models – the data collection systems, operational capability, exabyte-scale data warehouse, and software toolchain – to help our partners drive the field forward.

We’re hiring generalist software engineers who can work across the entire company. Your work could touch anything in our software stack. Some weeks you might be developing our data pipeline, other weeks you might be scripting a hardware integration, or shipping a quick internal tool. There’s a huge range of problems to solve here, and the only constant is that you’ll have a problem to solve.

What You’ll Do

Generalist engineers work on whatever has the highest impact. Examples include:

  • building backend services and APIs for our data platform and customer-facing product

  • writing data processing pipelines to transform and validate incoming robotics datasets

  • building the orchestration layer for workflows that leverage real robotic hardware

  • contributing to our data collection application across the full stack

  • scripting integrations between hardware systems, cloud infrastructure, and software services

About You

Baseline skills:

  • bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science or a related field

  • fluency with Python and at least one other language

  • ability to quickly ramp up in unfamiliar codebases, tools, and problem domains

  • comfort operating across the stack without needing a narrow specialization to be productive

You might be a good fit if you:

  • have built and shipped software in fast-moving environments where your role wasn’t clearly defined

  • have worked across multiple domains (backend, frontend, data, infra, scripting) even if you’re not an expert in all of them

  • have experience building systems that interact with physical hardware or manage compute-heavy workloads

  • have prior experience with AI, robotics, or large-scale data systems

  • are very comfortable working in 0→1 environments

  • are mission-driven and passionate about robotics: work at XDOF is fast-paced and constant. We hope you love what you’re going to be doing, because you’ll be doing a lot of it!

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
