About Nominal

Nominal is a venture-backed company with offices in Los Angeles, Austin, and New York City. We’re focused on building software and data solutions for organizations that test and validate complex systems—think drones, rocket engines, satellites, and nuclear reactors. Supported by leading investors like General Catalyst, Founders Fund, Lux Capital, and more, we’re gaining strong traction in the commercial and government aerospace and defense industrial base, including working directly with the Department of Defense.

Our team includes engineers and operators from SpaceX, Palantir, Anduril, Lockheed Martin, and NASA, all working toward a common goal: making it faster and easier for hardware engineers to push the boundaries of advanced technology safely and efficiently. Our platform helps engineering teams accelerate test data review and analysis, scaling testing campaigns to save time and cut costs.

As a Frontend Engineer, you’ll play a crucial role in developing and enhancing user-facing features of our platform. You will build scalable and intuitive web applications, focusing on high-performance visualizations and dynamic interaction design.

🚀 About the role

  • Develop and Enhance Features: Build and improve frontend functionality using modern JavaScript frameworks like React, Next.js, and TypeScript. Focus on creating polished, usable interfaces with an emphasis on user experience.
  • Collaborate Across Teams: Partner closely with backend engineers to integrate APIs (e.g., tRPC) and ensure seamless user experiences. Work with product and design teams to validate designs and iterate on features.
  • Build Scalable Systems: Contribute to scalable architecture, particularly when working with APIs and managing large data volumes to optimize the user experience.
  • Prioritize Performance and UX: Create high-performance, visually appealing frontend solutions that handle complex data sets efficiently. Ensure the product is fast, smooth, and intuitive to use, even under heavy load.

🙌 We’d love to hear from you if you have

  • 3+ years of experience in frontend software engineering, with a focus on building web applications and data-driven tools.
  • Strong knowledge of modern frontend technologies such as ReactNext.js, and TypeScript.
  • A passion for crafting beautiful, user-centric interfaces and a keen eye for design details.
  • Experience working on products for technical users, such as dashboardstime-series visualization tools, or complex data-editing environments.
  • collaborative mindset and a desire to contribute to the product roadmap by offering insights and feedback.

⚡ Skills that supercharge us

  • Frontend Development: Expertise in modern JavaScript and frameworks like React, Next.js, and TypeScript.
  • Styling & UI Libraries: Familiarity with Tailwind CSS or similar utility-first CSS frameworks, and Radix UI for building reusable UI components.
  • API Integration: Experience with APIs (RESTful, GraphQL, or tRPC) and integrating them into frontend applications seamlessly.
  • Performance Optimization: Knowledge of performance-focused tools and techniques for rendering large datasets and building responsive, smooth interfaces.
  • WebGL/Graphics: Experience with or interest in WebGL and working on data visualization projects is a plus!

  • 🏥 100% coverage of medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 🏖️ Unlimited PTO and sick leave
  • 🍽️ Free lunch, snacks, and coffee
  • 🚀 Professional Development Stipend

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
