About Redwood Materials

Redwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling — keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2017, we’re delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have.

Senior Software Engineer, Energy Storage

This position is on a team building the software platform that powers optimized control and market participation of battery energy storage systems (BESS) — software that runs both on site controllers and in the cloud. Our scope spans the full stack: compute infrastructure, telemetry, asset modeling, alerting, feature ingestion and storage for forecasting and optimization, simulation and operational control orchestration, and integration with energy markets. We're a lean team that holds ourselves to high standards in both the quality of what we build and the speed at which we build it. We value collaboration, trust, learning, and engineering excellence, and we genuinely enjoy building great things together.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Contribute to BESS data engineering — building and maintaining telemetry pipelines and stores, and feature ingestion and storage systems for forecasting and optimization
  • Design, build, and maintain simulation and training infrastructure — platforms for running and orchestrating simulations at scale
  • Develop and operate real-time forecast and optimization workflows, orchestrating pipelines that drive BESS operations
  • Support energy market integration, including data ingestion and bid management
  • Collaborate across the full stack and across team boundaries to ensure the product system works well as a whole
  • Write well-tested, well-monitored software and iteratively improve it over time
  • Apply AI tools to accelerate development while maintaining high system design quality and code standards

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong software design instincts — thinks in systems, reasons from first principles, and understands the real-world challenges of building available, reliable, scalable, and secure distributed systems
  • Comfortable using AI tools to move faster without letting them erode system design or code quality
  • Excellent collaborator — communicates clearly, listens well, and makes the people around them better
  • Bias toward action — takes initiative, makes progress in ambiguous situations, and doesn't wait for perfect information
  • Systems thinker and owner — willing to think and collaborate across team boundaries to make sure the product works well as a whole
  • Rigorous about quality — writes well-tested, well-monitored software and iterates on it over time
  • B.S. or advanced degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or another discipline, combined with 2-5 years of experience in software engineering.
  • Experience with relevant technologies a plus: Kubernetes, Rust, Python, NATS, PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB, SQLite
  • A passion for sustainability and making the world a better place!

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
