Flatiron Health is looking for a Software Engineer to help us accomplish our mission of improving and extending lives by learning from the experience of every person with cancer. In this role you will work on the Flatiron Clinical Pipe product team. Flatiron Clinical Pipe is a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) tool for zero-transcription oncology clinical trial study data capture from anywhere in the patient's medical record.
What you will do
Learning from the experience of every cancer patient involves building systems that are secure, scalable, compliant, and have excellent UIs. We welcome backend engineers, full-stack engineers, and aspiring architects. In this role you will develop new features, including designing software and infrastructure solutions, implementing those solutions, testing them, and deploying them. In addition, you'll also:

  • Independently resolve bugs, including investigating root causes, designing fixes, implementing fixes, writing automated unit tests, writing automated end-to-end tests, and deploying changes.
  • Document system elements, including communicating key design attributes clearly in written English, sometimes with supporting diagrams.
  • Perform design and code reviews.
  • Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and other internal stakeholders to deliver solutions that solve the problems of Clinical Pipe's end users.
  • Participate in daily standups, bi-weekly sprint meetings, and other team ceremonies.

Flatiron engineers work day-to-day with oncologists, product leaders, and data experts. In this role you'll have a chance to expand your communication skills and have mentorship outside of engineering.

You proactively identify problems that have a high impact on the business. Additionally, you have:

  • You hold a bachelors, masters, and/or Ph.D. in computer science or a related field
  • 3+ years experience developing full stack software applications
  • 3+ years experience programming in Node.js, Javascript, Go, Python, C#, or a similar language
  • 3+ years experience using relational databases like PostgreSQL or NoSQL databases like DynamoDB
  • Strong communication skills

Extra Credit

  • 3+ years experience configuring infrastructure using Terraform
  • 3+ years experience working in React

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
