SOFTWARE ENGINEER, ANDROID

Current is a leading consumer fintech platform transforming financial access for everyday Americans with over 6 million members. We provide access to financial solutions that seamlessly work together to solve the needs of our members and enable all Americans to build better financial futures. Based in NYC, our results-driven environment drives us to build better products, grow faster and empower everyone on our team to have an impact on our business and mission to improve financial outcomes.

Our mobile engineers are responsible for building the full suite of user experiences for our members, leveraging our proprietary backend banking core. The mobile apps are native (Kotlin/Swift) and primarily use gRPC to interface with our backend. Being the primary interface for our members to manage their finances (there isn't a web app), the mobile experience needs to be highly performant and intuitive to use. This forces our engineers to think through foundational layers of application infrastructure, reusable UI components, and the collection of data that drive these decisions. Join us for an opportunity to work in a fast-moving environment where your work is highly visible and has a direct impact on our members' financial outcomes!

We are looking for an Android engineer to join our team in New York. This role has a salary range of $160,000 - $200,000. The ideal candidate should have a few years of experience building native mobile applications and be ready to take on full ownership of features. This person should also be a motivated self-starter who feels at ease working through ambiguous challenges in a fast-paced environment.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

  • Owning the delivery of features from system design through launch, with support from senior engineers on the team
  • Contributing to the scalable and reusable mobile frameworks that drive code consistency and engineering velocity
  • Raising the bar on architecture, testing, and monitoring practices in the code you write and review
  • Helping Current's members build better financial futures through products like Paycheck Advance, Build Card, and Savings Pods
  • A strong culture of code and architecture review, with real feedback and room to grow

ABOUT YOU:

  • 2+ years of native Android development, using Kotlin
  • Working knowledge of Android fundamentals including component lifecycles, dependency injection (Hilt), multi-threading, persistence, and usage of Jetpack components (Compose, Material 3, Navigation, ViewModel, etc)
  • Comfortable working within a modularized app architecture, including unidirectional data flows, MVVM, and use of Gradle modules
  • Experience working in a codebase shared by a team of engineers, with a real code review culture
  • A genuine interest in the personal finance space!

BONUS:

  • Experience with profiling and optimizing UI performance (smooth animations, reducing jank, etc)
  • Experience with using gRPC (Google Remote Procedure Call) and Protobuf (Protocol Buffers) schemas for networking
  • Have published and maintained apps on the Google Play Store
  • Experience migrating legacy XML/View code to Compose

BENEFITS:

  • Competitive salary
  • Meaningful equity in the form of stock options
  • 401(k) plan

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
