Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Software Development Engineer in Test to bring strong software engineering practices to the discipline of test automation. In this role you will design, build, and continuously improve automation frameworks, write production-quality test code, and partner with development teams to embed quality engineering throughout the SDLC. The ideal candidate will combine strong programming skills with deep knowledge of testing strategy, including unit, integration, end-to-end, performance, and security testing in modern distributed systems. In this role you will work closely with cross-functional partners — product, design, engineering, operations, and business stakeholders — to translate ambiguous requirements into well-engineered solutions, and will be expected to raise the bar through code review, design review, and mentorship of more junior engineers. The successful candidate brings strong engineering discipline, a clear communication style, and a track record of shipping meaningful work that holds up well in production.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Five or more years of experience as an SDET or in test-focused software engineering roles.
  • Strong programming skills in at least one of Java, Python, JavaScript, or C#.
  • Hands-on experience with at least one major UI automation framework (Selenium, Cypress, Playwright).
  • Solid experience automating REST and/or gRPC APIs.
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines for test automation.
  • Solid SQL skills and experience with database validation.
  • Strong understanding of microservices, distributed systems, and modern web architectures.
  • Excellent debugging, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with contract testing tools (Pact, Spring Cloud Contract).
  • Hands-on performance testing with JMeter, Gatling, k6, or Locust.
  • Exposure to security testing tools (OWASP ZAP, Burp Suite, Snyk).
  • Familiarity with chaos engineering and resilience testing.
  • ISTQB or equivalent QA certification.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
